new member question on coat types Hi everyone, My Sophie is 11 mos and has a silky coat. I love her hair long but its getting difficult to keep nice. She always looks scruffy like she just rolled out of bed. I tried the yorkie shine products which helped but im considering having her clipped short. Will such a straight coat look good that way? Most of the yorkies ive seen are the wooley coats so im not sure what to do. Thanks so much for any opinions. Cindy |
Piper has a silky coat, too. I keep her at a mid length and have started using Precious Drop on her coat when I brush her. I wouldn't clip Piper short because her hair is so fine/thin and she's only 3lbs so her groomer said she would look like a little rat. o.O |
Aww her picture is cute and so little. Sophie is 9 lbs and her ends still have puppy coat which i think is part of the problem. Her coat looks thicker at the roots and i think it will be gorgeous when it gets long. Maybe ill just get her shortened because im afraid she'll have the same problem Piper does if its cut too short. |
My Charlie has the silky coat but he too looks very ratty if it gets to long like he is a hobo hahaha. I shave him down and have the "puppy cut" to his face. so its full. I dont worry about him getting cold cause he wears clothes all the time (hes a handsome dude) :D |
Mary, Charlie is adorable in that pic! I think the shorter cuts "look" like the coats are wooly/cottony by nature of the cut. I think a shorter coat will look fine on a silky coat. If you are on facebook, you should look up some well known yorkies on there...the FB page name is OwnedbyYorkies. They are so cute and they have silky hair. They wear clothes a lot so I am guessing they don't have super long body hair. Their faces are all cut shorter to have that round look. They are too cute for words. :) |

Acorn has the silky hair, and we cut it short. If it gets long (like I like it!) she starts to itch and roll all over the carpet for some reason. Thank goodness she has an extensive wardrobe to keep her warm :-) |
