Eating and chewing
 
Hi,

I have a 10 week old 2.5 pound yorkie, named Mork, and she eats so much. She eats more than my brother's dog, Gizmo, and Gizmo is 17 pounds and eats anything in sight. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy she is eating. It's better than last week when she wouldn't eat or drink anything. I'm just wondering if it is normal for them to eat so much. I'm worried that if I restrict her eating that she won't get the necessary nutrients but that if I don't that she'll be an unhealthy weight. Maybe eating lots is a good thing? If she gets sick again, she'll have the weight to lose? She is also drinking large amounts of water but I think that may be because of the antibiotics she is on. I won't take her water away. That would be cruel.

Also, she chews so much. She keeps trying to chew the cords to various electronics and I know that can be dangerous. Are there ways to prevent her from chewing on these cords (besides moving them)? I'm concerned she'll get a shock and get seriously hurt or killed if I turn my back for a second and she chews.

What food are you feeding her? Puppies can not be overweight so I would just let her eat. How much is she eating over the recommended amount? You might want to get a play pen to keep her in when you can't watch her. Some people will shake a can of change when they no something bad, some will give a firm "no" and if they don't stop move them away from the cord, some will redirect the chewing to a chew toy and some will use a squirt bottle with water. We started using a can of change when we had Callie her first few weeks but that had a negative effect on her and even at 6 loud noises scare her and I read a year or so ago how that can happen when using a loud noise like a can if change to correct them. I had great successes with a water bottle so that is what I suggest it dosent hurt them or make loud noises.

I put clear deodorant on the cords and Nala immediately stopped chewing on them.

Hi Lovetodream88,

I'm not sure what the recommended amount of food is for her. I just know that she is constantly eating. I'm feeding her Royal Canin. Is that a good puppy food? Between my dad and me, Mork is constantly watched. I'm just concerned that we'll turn our back for a half second. Also, I'm not sure we want to squirt her with water yet. She has Kennel Cough and just got over pneunomia. We have been redirecting her though.

Puppies don't normally gain unhealthy weight. As long as you are feeding her a good quality puppy or all stages food your pup will be fine. Make sure you don't give her human food scraps.

Find her a good all natural chew like bully sticks to chew on when you are there with her. It is usually not a good idea to leave a puppy alone with a chew. Always throw these chews away when they get small enough to fit in the mouth. They become a choking hazard. Rawhide is very bad as it is also a choking hazard and is not digested well in the stomach and it has caused blockages in the digestive tract.

Hi Mork's Mom,

Yes, clear deodorant! It tastes horrible and it is clear so you can't see it. It completely solved my problem with the chewing and she was happy to chew on her toys that tasted much better. :D

Thanks for the advice about the clear deodorant. I tried it. Unfortunately, Mork doesn't seem to care if there is deodorant on the item she wants to chew or not. Each puppy is different!!

Hi gracielove,

I got her some chews from the all natural dog store down the street from me. I also got her some dental chews, which she doesn't seem to like as much. Do you give your pup pigs or cows ears? Or, hooves? I might get her some of those.

She also has a chew toy that she likes.

Please be careful with chews and make sure not to buy any made in China. Pig ears have a lot of fat to much so for a yorkie. I would also be careful if buying bully sticks because they can cause broken teeth as well as diarrhea and stomach upset. When Callie was a puppy they had a toy that you got wet and then freeze for pups to chew on and she loved it.

Hi Lovetodream88,

Pig ears have too much fat? Do yorkies have weight problems? I did look to make sure her chew wasn't made in China. Bully sticks cause tummy aches and diarrhea? What is a bully stick? I probably shouldn't get those for Mork! I don't want her to get sick!

bullies are actually a pizzle or bulls penis....and they do get bacteria and such from hanging around. my gang loves them but we had to stop giving them as they did cause keylo some tummy issues.

and yes taylor is right please watch for any treats...no china treats and check all your ingredients to be sure theres no garlic or onion...i actually stopped all treats but wellness beef treats but this weekend i found a new one that is made in usa and is only dehydrated chicken breast...no preservatives or any bad stuff...they are called whole life and so far the chicken kind is a hit and like i said purely dehydrated chickien.

I'm not sure about what to do for a 10 week old puppy, but I can share how crazy Simba is about his new RC food.

I used to feed Simba, 6 month old now, with Blue Buffalo, he just snacked on them, never really ate his food as a dog. I recently switched him to Royal Canin Yorkie Puppy, he is eating these as treats and he finishes 1/4 cup within 2 mins (Is that too fast?).

I think RC food is just too delicious :P and it looks like it's coated in honey :P My vet suggested us to feed him on a schedule from the beginning. But we were not able to do it as Simba just won't eat his BB food. Now we can feed him only three times a day and a little less than 1/4 cup each time and every time I pull out the bag, Simba sits right next to me in a second.

Yorkies are prone to pancreatitis and that can be caused by eating fatty foods. Bully sticks are bulls penis.

Hi rubymoon2072,

I certainly don't want Mork to get sick! Can yorkies not have onion or garlic? I haven't been feeding her table scraps but I should probably be checking the ingredients of the products I let her eat. Does Taylor like the Wellness treats?
