Meeting new friends I am trying to introduce my yorkie to my daughters lab, the lab is 8 mo. old and very playful, the problem is that he weighs about 80 lbs - vs - 6 lbs. I want them to know each other and be able to play, very scared about size difference, and excitability of the lab. Any suggestions as how to introduce safely? |
I would start by keeping they yorkie in a crate and bringing the lab to the crate. Then introduce them while you hold yours. Then on a leash with a harness where you can pick yours up quickly if needed. |
Just be careful because lab puppies can be clumsy and not realize how big they are, most are very loving. I would have them meet through a crate or playpen. Judge how playful the lab is. See if he plays with his paws a lot like boxing, we had a lab that like to paw his playmates which can be too much for a little one. I have a lab and pointer mix that hang out with my 4 lb pups but she is now 12 years old so doesn't play as much as a puppy. When she was younger she was great with little dogs. She used to get down low and sway back and forth then would take off running. Like I said, it depends how the lab puppy plays whether or not they can play together. |
I agree with both the above posts. We introduced my yorkie to the resident English bulldog back in August we left Rasta(the yorkie) in his crate the first two days, then roam with a gate up in the kitchen, then playpen where they could sniff each other, outside, then no holds bar :-). Even though our bully is the sweetest dog ever I always have to keep an eye out because she doesn't know her own strength and is very clumsy...if I can't watch them they're seperated. |
I would advise that you be very careful. A large puppy could kill a yorkie without even intending to. I would not allow them to ever be alone unsupervised. |
Thank you for the responses, I think I will hold on tight, and just let them sniff each other for a couple of meets! It scares me to think he could get hurt while trying to play together! |
I'm having a similar issue at my house. I still live at home with my parents and my mom has a Bassett hound puppy. He's about 9 months old, and weighs probably 50 lbs! He's not done growing yet, his mom was a big dog. Cricket weighs about 7 lbs and while the two dogs want to play together, we can't let them. The Bassett hound just doesn't know his own strength! We have baby gates around our house to keep them apart. |
