Cold/Wet days I have a little problem that i dont know how to fix (i dont even think it CAN be fixed), but here goes.... Toby is potty trained (he does a good job) UNTIL it is teh rainy/ cold season of the year..... then he has accidents in the house because he hates the wet and cold outside. We usually open the slider door when he needs to go out, but he wont alert us anymore. I dont think there is any way to get him to not hate the rain/cold, is there any suggestions (short of creating a "sun room" with heat lamps for him to go potty in because i AM NOT doing that, he can freez his hiney off if that is what it is going to take_) |
Princess won't go out in the rain, she really hates it. We put down pads for her, we wouldn't want the little "Princess" to get wet. LOL |
Have you thought about just letting him go inside the house when the weather is bad out? Leave him paper or pads so he can go on those instead. I'm planning to train my pup for indoor potty and outdoor potty. |
My dogs wont go out in the rain so we let them out on our front patio that is covered. |

I just took him on a walk and he went both poop and pee so i guess i will just have to take him out on the leash a couple times a day :( poor me, i dont like the cold or wet either :D oh well, the things i do for my baby :p |
really? Hmm...I thought it would be fairly simple because my pup is not allowed to go outside yet due to not getting all the vaccinations so he is potty trained indoors. I figure that when he can go outside, I'll do my best to teach him to alert me. I don't think its as easy as I think its gonna be but I had a beagle 2 years ago that knew to go on newspaper indoors and in the backyard. |
Well I'm having a problem with that too. Tinkerbell is very house trained, but when it's windy and rainy out, she too seems to have accidents. I still make her go out but in between I have resolved to putting a diaper on her "just in case" She has only peed in them once, I don't think she liked peeing on herself. Wrap something around his little sprinkler and see if that helps. |
Well, poor Snodles goes outside even when it was 30 below last week. She will go to the door, and spin around, and then stand still to get her coat on. Maybe that could solve your problem! Put a coat on everytime he goes out! Pat |

My pup loves to go out regardless of the weather. I always put a coat or something on him when it's cold or wet. And we stay out only 5 or 10 minutes if the weather is bad. (He still doesn't want to come in.) I have puppy pads in the house - which he uses when he feels like it. And he wears the belly bands when he's running around the house. Occasionally, he will pee on the puppy pad with his belly band on. And, I for sure praise him a lot when he does this. I don't mind taking my pup outside, but the problem is that my timing isn't very good. He will often pee about 5 minutes before I planned to take him out. And, other times, I take him out and he's not ready to go. We're working on it! Good luck! Carol Jean |
Loki doesn't like the rain either. I put his rain coat on him and send him out anyway. Honestly he doesn't get that wet, only his paws, but he hates it. He hates the wind even more than the rain! I have found that if I go out WITH him he will not fight it. I also let him go in the mulch that's kind of under the awning. Otherwise he has to go in the grass. Oh, and Loki does the same thing about not "asking" to go out when it's raining. I just send him out every hour or so, or I watch him closely or put him in his crate. I won't let him get away with it if I can help it! Cleaning up pee is no fun. The funny part is that in the summer he doesn't hesitate to get drenched in the sprinkler. |

Josie doesn't like to go outside when it's raining, snowing, or really cold. We have a puppy pad inside that she uses. She used to have accidents but we would soak up the pee with the pad and leave it on there, then use a good enzyme cleaner to clean up the rest. Pretty soon she could only smell her scent on the pad so she just goes there. She doesn't alert us to go outside either, we just usually try every couple of hours. If she has to go before that, she uses her pad. It seems to work pretty well. |
Does anyone use the bell by the door as an alert? If yes, how did you train your pup to do that? |
Bouncer is not a big fan of the wet weather at all. Cold he will handle some to go out, but we put down pee pads in the winter for him. The ground is just so cold on their paws. |
