Hot dogs for Treats?? Yummy Stinky treats?? Does anyone use little pieces of hot dogs as treats?? I used to play search games, except instead of finding bombs, people, drugs or wild game, I would hide little dog treats. I figure, if they like that, they'd probably enjoy puzzle toys for x-mas. I was thinking about using real meat, specifically hot dogs, since my older dogs sniffer is broken. He's always congested bc of allergies, and he doesn't smell as well as he should. So, does anyone use hot dogs as treats?? Why or Why not?? Is there one type of hot dog that is better than another??? Also...What do you think the smelliest, yummiest treats would be...I am thinking some kind of meat, but I am not sure what kind would be the best....but I want something that's super high value and stinky!! |
I'd be concerned about the salt and fat. You might be able to get some low sodium turkey ones that are ok. Maybe some kind of stinky fish treat? |
I would skip the hot dogs, especially for a Yorkie, because of the fat, sodium, and calories. If you do use hot dogs for dogs or humans, Hebrew National pure beef are the best. Supposedly they don't have all of the awful fillers that typical hot dogs have. |
I wouldn't use hot dogs...too many nitrates & sodium for a breed prone to pancreatitis or digestive upsets, just scares me. My guys really LOVED the Wellness Pure jerky treats. It was easy to break up into little tiny pcs, perfect for puzzle games. |
Treats So sorry your dog had lost his sniffing ability, must be hard for him as sniffing usually seems to be their main joy! I would think that hot dogs are full of fat, salt, and uncertain ingredients. We don't even know if they smell good to dogs? It is not smelly but I use Pure Bites pure dehydrated chicken breast pieces. You can break off small bits and the food lasts a long time, especially if kept in the fridge. Hope you are able to fine a treat he appreciates. |
I definitely would skip the hot dogs... My two love the Wellness treats as well! |
We use boiled chicken breast for treats. Ours have very sensitive tummies and Laddy has allergies so I have given up buying him store bought treats. |
oh wow...I don't eat them so i had no idea they were full of sodium and fat. I just thought they were a bunch of gross animal parts(stomach, livers etc etc) and dogs seem to love that. These will definitely be a NO NO...my older one has gall bladder issues and pancreatic scarring so these could definitely upset his stomach. |
I would try salmon jerky pieces, they are so smelly but Gizmo loves them, and salmon is really good for them to get their omegas :-) I would not use hot dogs, but if so maybe check out vegetarian hotdogs that are organic? I would first see if they have any kind of sodium, onion or garlic, as those can be dangerous. |
I would stay away from hotdogs for the same reasons mentioned above. I would also stay away from them, because I know, how they are made, and what they are made of. I used to be a food service sanitation inspector/instructor, and very rarely will I eat a hotdog, and I would never give any to my furbaby. I'm not sure on why you want a really bad smelling treat, as they'll find the treat no matter what, if it's what they want to do. Good luck. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |
I would not do the hot dogs to fatty, chester has never had anything pork, my vet told me that years ago |
I agree that there is a lot of sodium and other bad stuff in hot dogs. They are not so great for people either. Try going to a place that sells some natural pet food products and look for some freeze dried treats. Dogs love them and they don't have any additives. If you don't have a store nearby there are lots of places online that sell them. |
I'm interested in the freeze dried treats also.....all I read is good about them ...any brand In particular? Is the fat content low in them? |
I've bought the freeze dried treats. The brand I bought had rather big chunks of meat so I had to break or cut them up. You could break up the chicken ones with your hands, but they were very crumbly and messy. The liver ones weren't nearly as messy, but they were much harder to break up by hand. My boys liked them more than the average dog treat...but they still weren't super crazy about them. |
