teddy bear? fox nose :animal36Hi there. I'm knew to this..so I'm not sure if im posting my question in the appropriate area..... When looking at a puppy that is less than 10 weeks--How can I tell if the puppy will end up having a short nose(teddy bear) or long pointy nose (fox) as it grows into adulthood? Anyone have before/ baby and after/adult pics to compare?:animal36 |

4 Attachment(s) I think you can groom the muzzle to be more round even if it is a bit long. And would depend on the coat too, like it'd be easier to shape a pup with cotton coat into a teddy face than one with silky. I always thought the fox/bear was more with Pomeranians, what do you think of Dracos? He's 9 months and the younger ones I believe he was around 9wks. |

I think the fox/bear/etc face is a sales ploy but I thought maybe the OP was just prefering a certain face shape. |

I havent had any breeder or yorkie seller use the 'fox/teddy bear' as a ploy to sell their puppies at all. I'm a newbie that has fallen in love with yorkies. Sure I prefer one look over another. . Bottom line, all yorkies are very cute and adorable.I havent purchased one yet, so why not try to get more info on getting the look that I prefer. Yorkies start off looking so simular to one another... but over time the transformation is incredible |

I havent had a breeder or yorkie seller use the "fox/teddy bear look as a sales ploy at all. Although I do prefer one look over another, all yorkies are cute and adorable. I'm still at the point of purchasing my furbaby for the first time, so why not try to get more info on getting the look that I prefer? It's just so confusing...Yorkies start off looking so simular to one another... but over time the transformation is incredible. Any advice is appreciated Thank-you to everyone that has responded and sent pics. |

My Marcel (my avatar) has a flatter face and shorter muzzle...more of a squish face. Some people may call his face a baby-doll face (but I wouldn't buy from a breeder who advertised like that). The pic of him in my avatar was when he was about 22 weeks old...and he still has a shorter muzzle etcetera. |

If you really prefer one look I'd say look into breeders with some older puppies because to me, looking at puppies before they're 4 months the most you might get is an idea of weight they'll grow to. Other than that it'd depend on the breeders knowledge as far as coat and color. 10wks seems a bit early to know much of anything on how the pup will turn out. |

You find the right breeder first and then get the pup. There are so many bad breeders that you can buy from that you will end up with a sick pup or a dog with serious genetic issues that doesn't show up until 2 years old. |

I have one pup with the foxy looking face(Princeton) and one that's a teddy bear or babyface(Ricky). I always think of the longer nose, foxy face yorkies as more of the old school yorkies and the teddy bear/baby face ones with the shorter, boxier muzzles, as more of the new age designer yorkies. As far as being able to tell what you are going to get in a pup so young, I can't tell ya that as I got both of my pups as adults. It seems like they all have cute little teddy bear faces as babies!! I'd think that the way the parents look would be a good indicator. It also seems like a lot of teddy bear faced yorkies are smaller adult dogs and maybe that has something to do with their faces staying so compact. |

4 Attachment(s) I thought the teddy bear face had longer muzzles & the babydoll face had shorter muzzles. But yes, these terms would be used as a marketing ploy from some unscrupulous breeders just to make more $. Reputable breeders do not use these words. I know in this case, it's just to describe a certain look. The Durrer Yorkie line has the shorter snout look w/huge eyes, like Ann's cutie Marcel. I guess my Mimi & Turbo would be teddy bear faces. When Turbo was a puppy, he had a very short snout, but he grew to have a longer snout. (pics in album, you can click on their names on my siggy) Here's Momo @ 9weeks old & now @ 5 years old. He has a short muzzle/snout: Attachment 394029Attachment 394030 This is Princess, she has a foxy look to her (loll maybe it's her big ears), she has very delicate features w/the pointy muzzle/snout. I don't have any good pics of her when she was a puppy, I lost a lot of their pics when I had to reformat my puter. But she did have a pointy nose as a puppy too.: Attachment 394032Attachment 394031 most recent pic @ 4 years old (she just turned 5 last month). |

I think if you find a good breeder and let them know what you are looking for they will either refer you else where or let you know when they have one that fits what your looking for. The key is doing your research and making sure the breeder you choose is reputable. Patience is a virtue you learn while choosing a puppy ;) |

1 Attachment(s) I guess Ellie has more of teddy bear face or at least that is what we were always told. Of course our breed did not advertise her like that and like many others have said, that is just a selling technique. I have included pictures of Ellie when she was a puppy to now. |

There are definitely different faces even among the best bred Yorkies. However, I would not deal with a breeder who uses terms like "teddy bear" or "baby doll" or "fox nose." If you want a puppy and not a young adult, the best bet for getting the look you want is to check out the parents. |
