New Puppy humping his toys Should we try to stop him from doing that or just ignore it! He's happy, well adjusted, eating, playing and using is pee pad-- well one accident....my fault really. Anyway, the humping issue....i know its dominance and not sexual at 12 weeks, but he's doing it to ALL his new bigger toys! He doosn't do it to the smaller ones from the breeder. Sheryl ps. the kids crack up laughing.....i know the 4 year old has no clue and giggles because the 9 year old laughs and it looks funny. I wonder if the 9 year old really understands! |
I would just ignore the humping. Its all a part of being a puppy. Its better that he is humping toys then humping your arms or legs. My breeder gave me a stuffed animal that my male humped. He stopped after he was neutered. |
I bet your 9 year old really does understand....I have a 9 year old and he understands more than I did at 20.... Lots of sex education went on here when we decided to breed Zoe.. Zoe's boyfriend had this chicken....whenever they put the chicken on the floor Max went crazy....Zoe actually went running from the room....scared the daylights out of her....Max was much more of a gentleman with her... :D |
The little one is stressed. He is settling into his new home and all the new things is a little over whelming. He is smart enough to know that if he Humps endorphins are released into his system and makes him feel better. Try giving him a break from all the activity and pop him in a kennel once and a while for a quiet time. At this age as long as it is just toys he is humping that aggression is not the issues but he does need to learn to handle stress in a better manner. This to should pass if you do not make a big deal of it as he grows but will happen once and a while when bored or stressed. Joy |
Humping..... I ignore when Mason gets a hold of his "Humpy bunny" I just let him do it and when I think they have both had enough I hide humpy bunny for awhile. :) |
I ignored it...my mother ignores it with her FEMALE maltese...such funny creatures! |
I think that it's completely a matter of personal preference. Some people provide a toy specifically for this purpose and redirect their dog to it when he starts humping. Others just try to stop the behavior. I don't enjoy watching Joey hump things so I generally don't let him have larger soft toys because they seem to be hump-magnets. |
Finnigen had a stuffed rottweiler that he humped ALL THE TIME our 9 year old boy thought it was hilarious and actually encouraged Finnigen to do it. We threw out the stuffed rottweiler and that was the end of the humping. He has a lot of other toys but they are all smaller than him, the rottweiler was the same size so I think he had to show it who was boss all the time. Shar-Lee & Finnigen (he's a year old and has been nuetered since 6 months) |
this is great! Thanks a lot.....i do really wonder how much my son understands...i might tell his father to talk to him. Meanwhile, I will ignore it and try to not give him so many big toys until he gets a little older! |

My Merlin has a "hump bear". He started doing it as a puppy and I never stopped it because I was told he was just expressing his dominance. He was neutered and has been in love with "hump bear" for 7 years. It's the only particular stuffed animal he's been... attached with, and it's one ULGY looking bear after all these years. If you don't want to watch it for 7 years and counting, I would take it away now. After the first year of Merlin's affection, I just felt too bad to be the one to throw the bear away. The things we do for our puppies! |
So do you think that once I get him neutered he'll stop? Is there anything I can do to prevent him from humping me? |
Hi, My boy humps his sister and his sister humps him. I just scoop them apart. I find it worse that he keeps "cleaning" her after she wees. Everytime. She seems to like it. Yuck. any ideas. They are about 5 months now. Sam&dees mom |
Such Funny Stories! I think this is something the Mother does to her babies when first born to get them to go wee-wee and to go poop. I must say that from all the stories on this thread, my husband and I both got several big laughs and have really started today off right! LOL |
For the past 10 minutes I've been watching Giovanni trying to hump one of my winter beanies w/o any luck. It was so cute and yet so hilarious to watch. But at least he's not trying to hump me anymore. I hope he grows out of it or at least stops once neutered. |
