Lepto shots????
 
I have read advice on not giving Lepto to dogs....is this just for puppies or is for when they get older also....We spend our summers camping so there is alot of contact with wild animal urine and also we live in the woods and there is a fox that is running around...and I have read that the Fox is the number one reason for giving Lepto....Lizzy will be 16 weeks soon and she is due for more vaccines and I still have not decided if she should get the lepto or not...plus with her cleft pallatte I am wondering if this would be a problem..I have mentioned this to my vet and he said it is up to me.....opinions on this would be great......I am worried about the fox urine I'm sure my yard has seen...the fox was spotted just the other day at the neighbors....

I thought it was rodent urine...??? Is it fox urine also?

thats what my vet had mentioned to me when we were talking about whether or not to vaccine her against it....and unfortuatly we have plently of rodents around to....may having the fox isn't so bad...if he only sticks to getting rid of the rodents.....he also mentioned raccoon urine was bad also....

My vet was very adament that my dogs had to have the lepto shot and they had it with no reactions.

how old were they when they had the shots...and does weight play apart into it??

I could be wrong but I thought they said lepto was in everry shot they gave them except the rabies starting at 8 weeks. Jewels was real small only 12 oz when she got her 8week shot.

Some vets have taken lepto out of the series and give it seperately and when they are older due to problems that they were having it...my vet is one of them...although he said he has not seen a problem with it personnally.

If you can get it done separately that is the way I would do it. By the time I said anything to them about the lepto my dogs had already had them in prior shots with no reactions so I just let them have it in the series

Thank you for the article....This article obviously says that getting it is a waste of time and money and a unnecessary risk of reaction....hhmmmm...don't know what to do...like I said we go camping almost every weekend in the summer....

I lost a dog to Lepto so I would do it if your dog is in an area where there is risk of catching it. I live in a pretty rural area and had never heard of it until my golden retriever came down with it a couple years ago. In our case we would take our dog to the river to play and the vet said wild animals come down to drink and urinate near the river (although I thought he mentioned deer as the carriers).

My vet does not recommend the Lepto for my Yorkies and many a dog has had a bad reaction to this shot.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease of animals and man caused by a spiral-shaped organism (spirochete) of the genus Leptospira. The important serotypes recognized in livestock in the United States include Leptospira pomona, L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, L. grippotyphosa and L. hardjo. These organisms have a wide host range, including man. Among domestic animals, swine, cattle, dogs, and horses are most frequently affected. Known wildlife hosts include many of the small rodents, raccoons, foxes, opossums, skunks, deer, and moose.

Because of the nature of the disease, it should not be considered a problem of the individual animal but a problem of a population, either a herd or a species within the area. The disease can be controlled by proper management and the correct use of available vaccines.

Method of Spread
Leptospirosis is generally contracted by the direct splashing of urine from infected or carrier animals into the eyes of susceptible animals

yesterday we had 12 deer in our yard...I think I will get the shots....deer fox raccons other rodents all live in my yard....maybe I should check into for myself....it seems we are doomed>>>>

Yea there are dogs that got Lepto in my area too. Thats why my vet is so insistent that you get the shot.
