I've often wondered-now I'm sure Many times I have wondered if they recognize their own breed. Now I'm sure they do. I take bubba and sissy to a local dog park that has a large and small dog areas. Bubba runs like a nut greets and plays with everybody. Sissy on the other hand does not. She is very stand offish and only interacts when she feels they are getting too rambunctious. Most of the time she is right beside my leg or asking to be picked up. There are all breeds of little dogs there but yesterday a woman came in with two little yorkies and she ran over kissed them and was wagging like crazy. All the time they were there she watched them like she was their mother (she is spayed-never had pups). I'm couldn't believe the way she was acting. Do yours recognize other yorkies? |
This is interesting, my pup hasn't been to a dog park yet because she is still in her round of vaccines, but when we were at the vets, this guy had a large teapot yorkie with floppy ears, he was huge..like 30lbs lol but so adorable. Rosie kept staring at him from across the room, she was so fascinated by him, and he kept staring at her too, there was other dogs and kitties there but it's like the world stopped around them and they were the only two in existence it was so cute lol. |
Friends We go to the park and walk our yorkie pups. They see other dogs and shy away from them even the small ones. But there is one yorkie named Jack and it is like they recognize each other. They greet each other with a kiss. It's like a family reunion. |
I am not so sure about my younger guy...he loves everyone...but I am positive that my older guy recognizes other yorkies and he prefers yorkies to any other breed. He only gets excited about other dogs when it's a yorkie...otherwise, he will pretty much snub them. I first noticed it with my moms yorkies, as I'd never seen him so excited before...but he also gets excited when he sees neighbor yorkies and yorkies at the pet stores. He spent the first 7 years of his life with a pack of yorkies and maybe this is why he recognizes and prefers other yorkies. Prince did get excited once about a little female chi once...but i think he had a crush on her. |
I doubt my Poppy even knows she is a dog. She acts more like a human baby, sometimes like a cat. Never a dog. |
I do think they are aware that there are differences between dogs. We live on a cul de sac with lots of other dogs. Rhett barks at each and every one. The only exception is another yorkie who could be his twin. Instead, he will sit there and watch him through the window. It's funny to watch sometimes. We aren't sure if its because he realizes that Tucker is another Yorkie or if he can't figure out how he is seeing himself outside ;) |

I'm convinced my boys recognize their own breed, without any cues from me. Max and Teddy are drawn to them and accept them immediately. Other dogs have to be evaluated. |
Interesting |
I think you are all right. My Pippo barks at all dogs, big and small, but just about turns himself inside out when he sees another yorkie. |
Unfortunately my furgirls have never seen another Yorkie. There are not a lot of them here, and we don't go to dog parks because they are too far away and too many big dogs. But they are friendly with other breeds that come to visit our home. |
Thanks for your validation. Too bad I'm not still a student (bubba says, oh come on its been 35 yrs since you graduated from nursing school). I think it would be a great research paper for some vet student or animal behaviorist. |
They definitely do :-) Gizmo goes to the dog park at the beach near my house everyday, and he loves everybody and every dog. He will play with any dog, but if a yorkie shows up, all bets are off lol. He quickly abandons the other dogs and goes straight for the yorkie. He will then play with the yorkie as long as its there, like none of the other dogs exist anymore haha. It's like the other dogs in the park are just substitutes until a yorkie shows up :-) He was doing this yesterday, then an adorable 5lb girl yorkie named coco showed up, and now Gizmo has a new girlfriend xoxo. They loved each other so much and were just zooming all over the place together :-) it was funny too, whenever another dog tried to come near them, Gizmos new girlfriend would chase them off haha. She was like hey that's my boyfriend back off lol. We exchanged numbers because we both agreed that they loved each other so much, they use have play dates from now on :-) |
Mina will let other yorkies , morkies, poodles and chihuahua ,,,her size,, near her. She has on two occasions beared her teeth at big dogs. She will shy away from other small dogs. She accepts these other breeds as friends because she also happens to live with poodles and Chihuahua and our neighbor has a morkie. So I do believe that they recognize breeds like them or their fur siblings. |
