Just Got A Yorkie Need Advice
 

Hi I am a first time yorkie owner. My aunt has a toy and me and my wife have been wanting one for a while. We got a 3 year old yorkie from a man who used to breed them and he had at least 15 yorkies. He is a male, and unlike my aunts yorkie ours is very skidish around us not letting us pet him or pick him up. Also he isnt eating very much. I am currently trying to house train him and he has had a few accidents but seems to be getting a little better. Any advice on house training tips or how to make him more comfortable with us would be appreciated. We also have 2 black labs who he doesnt seem to like very much but they want to play with him.

He probably didn't get much, if any, human interaction. Give him time. Sit on the floor with treats and let him come to you. Give lots of praise. Welcome!!

It's about puppy mill rescues, but dogs that were used as breeders were probably in a similar situation. There are a lot of good tips on house breaking & getting to know your Yorkie. Hope it helps!

Thanks for rescuing that baby. It doesn't seem like he had great social interaction. That will take time. Same for the potty training. The tips I can give is consistency and patience is the main key. Don't let the dog out of site at anytime until potty training is down. If your unable. Crate training is always a great option. Always use the words go potty. When it happens s. Reward with a rarely given special treat. I use pet botanic rolls chopped up in little pieces. Praise is a huge thing for them. Feel free to come to us with any questions or concerns. First of all welcome to YorkieTalk. You have come to the right place to get information. If it's yorkie related I can almost guarantee that someone here has "been there done that."

How long have you had your new addition? If he is three years old, it may take a bit of time for him to adjust. Remember when you brought him home his entire world and everything he ever knew changed. Some yorkies don't have issues with change, others take a while to acclimatize to their new surroundings.

My best suggestion would to take everything slow and be very patient with your new little one. Give him some time and space and I would almost guarantee he will come around.

One of the first things I did to bond with my girl was to go outside and run around and then she started chasing me. Establish yourself as someone fun for your boy to be around. Also, nothing stimulates an appetite like some good physical activity.

Firstly, has he been neutered? That could make him feel extremely frisky!!! Especially if that has been his 'job' in life :( He's probably feeling all over the place....he doesn't know where he really is at the moment, doesn't know what's expected of him?

It's just time, patience and diligence at the moment, potty-training-wise....it sounds like you're getting there....just give it a while :) (+ he'll eventually get to LOVE your labs....mine did!!! :D) Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x

I would think given his situation he is probably not well socialized, as he was a breeder and not a pet. I would give tons of praise as well as a treat when he gives the proper behavior, and not reprimand him for bad. If he des something wrong, just ignore it and he will know its something that is not good, just because he gets no praise or treats.

I would also go very slowly with him as well, but try eventually to set up a play date for socialization with another smaller dog. He may e at first intimidated by the size of your larger dogs :-)

How are you doing potty training ? Are you training him for outside or inside with potty pads? Gizmo first learned inside with potty pads, and now does both. It might also help to get a large xpen for him that has room for a food area, a potty area and a sleeping area, as it may help him feel a little safer, and you can use it when you see he is getting a bit stressed. I cover the sleeping area of Gizmos expen when it's nap time. That's another thing you can do, is work on a schedule so e knows what's expected at all times. I did this up until the last week or so, and now Gizmo only goes in his xpen at night for sleeping. At first though the xpen was invaluable in getting him into a schedule :-)
