Dark poop after spay My girl Cookie was just spayed Monday morning, and tonight she had a pretty dark poop. She isn't on any kind of painkillers and napped a lot today, but I'm guessing the napping is normal this soon after a spay, especially when I'm keeping her confined to a room where she can't run or jump up on anything. Does dark poop indicate blood in it or something? I have completely changed her over from Royal Canin kibble to Pedigree canned food since she had three teeth pulled. Is this something to be concerned about at all? |
How long has it been since you changed her food? Before/After spay? I'm not an expert but it doesn't sound like anything's wrong. Is she eating and drinking normally? When she's awake, is she alert and playful? Are her gums moist and pink? If answers are yes, than she should be ok and darkness might be from the food. But just to be sure, I'd like to suggest you give your vet a call and ask. Never hurts to ask questions. :) Also, have you checked the posts on dog food? I believe there are better quality dog foods compared to RC and Pedigree. I feed my two Blue Buffalo Life Protection for small breed. |
Dark Stools generally mean old digested blood. Bright & Red stools mean more active bleeding. Monitoring gums for paleness as a sign of anemia and belly for bloating. If you see no signs of either you should be home free. Just a reminder if your dog goes under anesthesia just like humans start a clear liquid diet slowly (by encouraging water intake and enteracal supplements) until the gut "wakes up" (gurgling noises) before reintroducing food. My wife wrote the above, and she's a RN, hope it helps. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |

Thanks Quad (and thanks to your wife too!) |

For the food I really trust my breeder's recommendation of Royal Canin, and she is so healthy and energetic on that diet, plus her coat is so awesome right after brushing (of course she becomes a hot mess 5 minutes later when she goes and rolls in the grass lol). |
Most likely just from the teeth being pulled, some is also ingested during the operation. If the poo is just dark and everything, gums, no bloating, etc, then there should be no problems. I would call your vet in the morning, just to check with him. I wouldn't worry, she sounds like she's recovering just fine, just continue to monitor her gums, and incision. She is eating and drinking fine, sleeps a lot but looks and moves around like normal and really wants to go play every single time when we go out back (in fact, she tries to drag me on the leash!). |
It looks like normal swelling to me, but if she's eating, and her potty habits are the same, plus wanting to play, I'd say she's fine. I'd still call your vet if you're worried, and to let them know about the vomiting from the first couple of times eating. Let us know what the vet has to say if you ask him. If she seems like she's straining a bit.. Perhaps you should give her some canned pumpkin? You can get it at the grocery. Pure pumpkin though. It helps with softening the poop but not really loose like diarrhea. |

Have you taken her temperature?? If nothing else, I would definitely give the vet a call tomorrow with my concerns. I've heard the Pepto Bismol causes poop to turn dark..basically black. Have you given her any pepto, by chance?? |

I was giving her small meals, but I guess I gave her too many of them and need to work on my portion control. |
LOL, I'm trying to get her to go to bed and all the Cook wants to do is chew on the zipper of her bedcover. |

Cook's stomach looks great this morning after our potty trip. |
Good to hear! Just wanted to ask though.. Have you stocked up on what I'd refer to as first aid kit for pups? Things like nutrical, vet approved diphenhydramine (like baby benadryl), styptic powder, etc.. |

As for the benadryl, be sure you know what amount to give. :) Benadryl Dosage For Dogs | Benadryl Dosage For Dogs Dosage Chart |
Glad to hear Cookie is doing well, Gina is driving me crazy, I just had to put her back in her x-pen to keep her off of the back of the couch. She doesn't like the onesie at all, but she can't get at her stitches, so she's in them for the duration, till they come out. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |
