New to site. Need advice. Hi All. Im new to this site and was looking for some advice. Im allergic to dogs and cats but was looking to get a dog for my family. I heard that Yorkies are hypoallergenic and would make a good pet. Ive never had a dog growing up but am considering to get for one for our family. I have a 10 and 12 year old that would love a dog. ANY advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. |
There are people who are still allergic to Yorkies I would make sure you spend some time around one before getting one. |
As you say, Yorkies are one of the breeds that's considered to be "hypoallergenic". However, it doesn't necessarily mean you won't have allergic reactions to them. I did some reading recently on this b/c there was suspicion that my mom might be allergic to dogs. Do you know anyone with a yorkie? If so, I suggest you play with the dog and see if you have any reactions. Let the dog lick you and what not b/c from what I've read, their saliva is one of the things that'll trigger any allergic reaction. Also, if you've never had any pet that requires a lot of time, energy, and probably money (like a dog), I strongly suggest you REALLY think things through. I'm not trying to discourage you from adding a new family member but I see so many people not fully realizing what commitment these little pups require. But if you can weather some of the storm that comes with owning these wonderful breed, they bring your family so much joy! Please read the stickies which is full of great information. I would add that if you decide to go forward with adding a Yorkie to your family by all means "buy the breeder first". Be sure the person you are purchasing from is a ethical Yorkie Breeder. Hello and welcome to Yorkie Talk. Yorkies are wonderful loving family members. Raising a yorkie puppy correctly takes a lot of time and dedication. It's like having another child in the household. Most people that are allergic to dogs are not allergic to yorkies. My recommendation would be for you to go visit some breeders so you can see how you react to them. I think getting a yorkie with a silkie coat versus a cottony coat would also reduce your chances of having a allergic reaction to them. Before purchasing a puppy please realize that it is a big commitment. Potty training can be challenging. I don't know your work situation but personally I don't recommend yorkie pups for people that work full time and are not able to at least check on the pup during the day. I do wish you the best of luck in your search for the perfect fur baby. |

Yes, they have less dander because they have hair and not fur, but they do still shed skin cells (which is what the bulk of dander is composed of). It's also possible to be allergic to the saliva of dogs. Spend a lot of time around one before you make the decision. Nothing is more heart breaking than getting attached to a pup and then having to rehome it. |
