Yorkie or Yorkie s**tzu Mix? 1 Attachment(s) We just inherited this doggie from a close friend who passed away. She's 8 years old, name is Missy, and she is SO sweet!! Will not leave my side and we just got her last night! The friend told us she is a Yorkie-s**tzu mix - but her sister (who was the original breeder) told us she is a full-bred Yorkie with registration - ?? I've never seen a Yorkie this big or this black, but what do I know?! Anyway, just wondering what y'all think? Not that I care really - but just kinda want to know what kind of dog she is! - Jacki |
Well, I know for sure she's cute! Probably is a mix but she doesn't look too s**tzu to me. |
she look's like a chocolate Sht zu, but is beautiful anyway's. Sht zu are really nice and well behaved dog's. Hoping she has found her forever home. Welcome to Y T . we have lot's of fun on here and learn plenty of thing's about all type's of dog's. Anne/Luci:p |
She looks more maltese than s**tzu mix, definetly a mix though. Her face looks like my maltese/ yorkie mix. |
She looks just like by Zoe who is a shorkie. (shih tzu yorkie). I paid $1300 for Zoe and I love her to death. |
she is beautiful and what a saint for giving her a loving home. welcome to yt and we love her no matter what she is. ;) |
I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that she is a mix. That hair looks like a shih tzu but that face is yorkie! She is the right size for a shih tzu. She is adorable by the way. |
I see schnauzer there. I would say you have a snorkie. And a cute one at that. |
I would have to say that she is mixed but with what who knows. If you know what other type of breed the breeder has you may find your answer. |

She is a cutie but she doesn't have the "mashed" muzzle of a shih tzu. |
Thanks so much, everyone, for the warm welcome for both me and Missy(!) and for the thoughts on what type of breed she might be...! I think we're going to try to find out what vet our friend used for her so we can get her records transferred to our vet - and that might give us some more insight as well, though at this point I'm pretty convinced she is NOT a pure Yorkie(!) - but yes, she's adorable no matter what exactly she is, and it does seem she's hypoallergenic, which is great because both my husband and myself are allergic to certain types of dogs - and she does not shed at all. She is sooooo attached to me already! I'm about the same size as her previous mommy so I think she is associating me with her. She runs from my husband - we think she may have not been treated very nicely by our friend's son who lived in the house with them. This is partly why the friend wanted someone to take the dog who would really love her because her son "hates the dog" according to her. I felt SO urgent about picking her up on Monday as quickly as we could (friend passed away Sunday evening) - I was afraid she might get hurt by the son taking his anger out about his mom passing away... Anyway - one other question - might should go in another spot, but I do plan to let her fur grow out for the winter and wondered what type of brush is best for her? She got a bath yesterday and her fur is just a little curlier now than in the photo and it's not terribly thick, but I don't know if I should get a slicker brush or a regular brush for her. Or she might need both - one for when she has the puppy cut and the other for when it's longer. I'm also thinking if we let her fur grow out it might show more of what kind of dog she looks like the most! |
I don't know too much about dogs in particular but she doesn't look half shih tzu, ''shorkie's'' as they call them are a big more stout with short legs, and have flatter noses like the shih-tzu but with mixes anything can happen they can come out any way! I haven't really seen chocolate shih-tzu's too often, most of the time they are brindle, or brown/white, honey/white black/white...Maybe this pup is half chocolate miniature poodle? I see some poodle in her a little bit, but the way the tail has a fluffy ploom at the end makes me think shih-tzu and most poodle mixes end up curly haired lol..When I was looking for a puppy at first I almost went with a shih-tzu and saw a lot of advertisements for shorkies and they look different, they tend to usually have the fur patterns of shih-tzu too. Hard to say, but pup is really really cute! If the shih tzu parent was brindle they would likely come out chocolate though! |
By looking at the photo she appears to be part Shih Tzu but you can for sure see the terrier in her by looking at her face. You have quite a combination there! If she inherited the Yorkie coat she may very well have a thin coat as Yorkies do not have undercoats. I use a small pin brush on Gracie but I always use a good metal grooming comb on her first to get out all the tangles. Brushing a coat that has tangles in it (and they sometimes tangle easily) can be painful. We bathe Gracie weekly because she is always with us on the furniture and in the bed. Using a good brand of all natural shampoo and conditioner keeps the skin and coat in good condition and keeps it manageable between baths. I also use a spray conditioner for daily grooming. It keeps the ends from tangeling and breaking when you comb. I'm so glad you rescued this little sweetie so quickly. Hopefully she will learn to trust your husband with time. If he gets down on the floor to talk to her he may earn her trust a little quicker. Sometimes people forget how threateningly large we look to a small frightened dog. Moving slowly and quietly with patience will work wonders sometimes. Best wishes to you and your new little girl. |
I love my maddan brush, and my butter comb. Since you don't know what her mix is, you won't know how long her hair will get. These are my essential grooming tools I use everyday. |
