Questions I have been trying to make sure that I will make a good parent for a yorkie. I've been reading all about them and the care. Everyone I talk has been trying to tell me to get a different bred because yorkies are hard to house break, very hyper(misspelled) and will not love on you. I don't believe this I have made an appointment to go see a puppy today and I know that I will fall in love with him today. I want a female and everyone tells me if I'm going to get one get a male because they are a little better. I don't believe all of these things please help me I have so much love to give. I think I have educated my self so much I can just about tell you everything about a yorkie. Please help. Thank you |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Yorkies are full of love! My boys are love bugs. Potty training can be more challenging, but maybe you will be one of the people who has no problems at all. I didn't have any problems in that department. The first year or two can be like having a highly mobile toddler who needs non-stop attention. I was exhausted sometimes and Max made me cry a couple times -- trying to protect him from his dangerous stunts. Yorkies are work, but they are worth it! Best wishes in whatever you decide. |
They are so worth it. Bella was no trouble to housebreaking, and she is a love bug. They are very active, curious and mischievous. I love this breed!!!! |
Yorkies rock!!! I too was told by ppl not to get a yorkie because they're too "yappy" and potty training would be a nightmare. My Rasta is vocal when he sees strangers or anything he perceives as a threat. He tried to protect me from a Halloween decoration :rolleyes:. Potty training is like any other dog. Even my housebroken English Bulldog still has accidents once every couple of months. You just have to stay consistent and realize things will get better. Not all pups are cuddlers. I can honestly say my bulldog is more cuddly than Rasta but he has his moments and if I want to cuddle he'll "grin and bear it" but he mostly wants to wreak havoc/play hehehe. Every pup is an individual just pick the one with the personality you like and disregard gender(I was going to get a girl also then saw Rasta and I was a goner). Btw Welcome to YT!!! |

A few bad apples seem to be able to spoil the whole bunch lol. Most people just like to remember and report on the bad of things. My yorkie is VERY loving she follows me every where, will only eat if I feed her, loves to lay on my lap or my legs/feet, shuts down when I have to leave her, she was also potty trained by 9 months old. Yorkies can be a little stubborn but so can I and its one of the things I love. I find out of all the dogs I had growing up that yorkies are just different they are very intelligent to the point where yes they will out smart you. Callie although a larger yorkie can learn a trick in 10 minutes. Most of the stories I hear of yorkies is they follow there owners every where and are very loving. |
Welcome to YT. Yorkie's are worth all the trouble of training, however they are no more trouble than any other dog. Each one is different, even from the same litter, and if a Yorkie is what you want, then never let anyone tell you what or what not to get. I've never had a male, my wife did, she used to breed back in the mid 80's. I met him and he was a very sweet little boy. I've had 2 females, Megan I had for 15 years, and she was glued to my side, and Gina I've had for 4 months now, she is very sweet, and very smart, and I am a Yorkie man to the core. I've heard all those things for years leading up to getting Billi and since I've gotten her, too… In my experience, Billi has been extremely easy to train and house break. She has her stubborn moments, but she's in her toddler stage and ALL dogs go through it. Just be firm and patient and they get through it. Billi has been such a wonderful addition to our family, that even the one who didn't want a dog, let alone a yorkie, has fallen completely in love with her. These dogs have such spunk and personality and smarts and are loving and playful to boot. I'd say to anyone who claims not to like them cuz of their reputation that they're really missing out on a sweetheart of a companion. |

Welcome to YT. I agree with everyone else in that they are wonderful little love bugs. I'm sure there are some that aren't much for cuddling, etc., but our little Annie is a 4 year old rescue, and she is a LOVE BUG!!! She is still trying to learn to use the potty inside, but for the most part, she's getting it! :) I don't think you will be disappointed at all in getting a yorkie. I do think the potty training reputation is well-earned, but both yorkies I have had are incredibly loving. They're also both very active. Yorkies are certainly not the breed to get if you want a dog content to relax on the couch all day. I wouldn't call them hyper, but yorkies definitely need playtime and outside time. Still, with some hard work they can be housebroken as well as almost any other dog. |
Hi! I haven't been around in a while but I have a 20 month old female Yorkie named Hope! I was told the same thing by well meaning friends....yorkies are yappy, hard to train etc. I knew what I wanted & took the plunge anyway & have never been sorry I did! Hope is a JOY! She is my first dog so I don't have anything to compare her to, but she is amazing! She is not a barker, did great with potty training & loves to play & snuggle! Good luck in your search! |
