I feel soooo guilty right now :-( So the other day, Tuesday actually. I was walking into the kitchen with a glass in my hand, when my foot drop kicked in, which is caused from my paralysis, and my foot just went right out from under me and I fell. I have travertine stone flooring in my kitchen, so it was a very hard fall. I tried to avoid landing on my back where all my plates and screws are, and also avoiding my head, I landed on my hands and knee caps. Gizmo was following me, and when I hit the ground I fractured my left hand and the glass in my right hand shattered and went right through my hand causing a ton of stitches as it ripped my hand right open. Both of my knee caps are totally swollen and bruised and I can't walk on them. My biggest concern once I landed even before I could get up, was to get Gizmo off the floor because he's like a little Hoover vacuum , and I was afraid he would eat a piece of glass, so I needed to get him in his pen safe. After about 5 minutes I was able to get up and take him to his pen, but I held him until I could get up to keep him safe. We took him to his babysitter while I went to the ER and had everything treated. Now both my hands are fully bandaged, one with a big splint on it, and the other with a bunch of stitches, now I'm also stuck on the couch. I feel horrible because Gizmo wants me to play and go for walks so bad, but I can't even pet him :-( thankfully my husband took the rest of the week off work so he's taking care of him, but the looks I get from Gizmo breaks my heart, it's like he doesn't understand and thinks I just don't want to touch him. I have been sneaking him a treat here and there :-) ughhhh I can't wait for 10 days to come to get my stitches out,to at least free up one of my hands or some pets, and I don't know how long I have to stay off my feet because I can't walk right now my knees are so bruised and swollen. Not sure what I'm going to do on Monday, as my hubby is a fire fighter and is going on long shifts. I swear the stupidest stuff happens to me from my spinal cord injury. At least I have my daughter that has offered to help some as she works part time at our near by hospital and only lives a block away, but I am so frustrated right now, and feel so guilty that I'm not the one giving Gizmo the attention right now. Ok I'm done ranting :-( Has anyone else ever been incapacitated and what do you do to make sure your baby knows you still love them? Gosh I miss our walks and playing right now !!!!! |
Oh no, that's terrible. Please get better soon. I'm sure your pup knows how much you love him. Maybe you could lay on a blanket on the floor and coo over him and get smothered in puppy kisses. That's what I would do. |
Oh no! Hope you are better soon. Our fur babies seem to know when we are sick, so I'm sure he understands. |
That's horrible, horrible, horrible! But how are you managing to type your post? |
Oh goodness I am so sorry hope your pain goes away and you heal up fast. |

dog I am thankful you are home and your Yorkie is fine. Falls are terrible so whatever it takes to keep you from falling do it. Use a walker if you need it or a cane. I don't care how it looks if it keeps you safe do that. We have tile and it can be slippery. Gizmo will sit by you and know you need some healing before the walk happens. |
That is just terrible! It sounds so painful and scary and totally debilitating. You poor thing. Is there another firefighter's wife who could stay with you for a day or two when your husband is on duty? Or a nurse's aide or something? It sounds like you are really going to need some help for a bit with all those injuries and stitches in that hand. I hope the doctor gave you pain medicine! I'm so sorry this happened to you and couldn't help but smile when I read that, typically, the Yorkie was the first thing you worried about right after your awful fall! Please get to feeling better very, very soon and I know we will all be praying for a rapid recovery. God bless you. |
I think Gizmo is smart enough to know that you are not up to what he would usually expect of you. These little ones are very smart. He has noticed the change in household activities. Maybe his looks just indicate how curious he is about how you are feeling. Does he come up on the couch and snuggle with you? When I am well Gracie always expects her 2 walks a day to be carried out at the appropriate times of day. The only time she doesn't get to go is if it is really raining hard....like today or too much snow. I try to let her know the weather is too wet but I guess she thinks she is part seal or something. She will give me the "looks" and even bark at me when the appropriate time passes and I don't get the leash out. They can really make you feel guilty. Usually if I am sick or in pain she knows it and just becomes a different dog. She snuggles in and will stay right next to me most of the day. I will throw the ball for her now and then so she gets some entertainment but she doesn't give me the guilt trip that she would ordinarily work on. Maybe make some room for him on the couch with you and let him do his nurturing job. I'll bet he will be very good at it. Gracie has been like this since she was quite young. It is amazing to see because she is usually very active. |
Yea I tried to let him lay with me, but he thinks YAY I get to play Rottweiler with mommy lol. He bounces all over growling and acts like he's attacking while in the zoomie mode, I think because he gets so excited haha. Is my puppy the only one who wants to play " I am a Rottweiler and I'm in attack school? LOL he does it all in good fun, but with no hands, it's hard to guard his leaps at me hehehe. And believe me, it's all in good fun for him, and he's super happy when he's doing it, absolutely no aggression what so ever involved :-) just a very fast exciting game we always play on the couch. He really is the most loving pup ever, but just not one to sit still much, as there is far to much playing to do :-) |
I am glad you are okay! How scary! I cannot imagine how helpless you must have felt... I hope you heal quickly and can get back to playing with Gizmo. Is there someone that can watch him for a couple days when your hubby goes back to work? |

I might have to see if he can stay with my daughter for a couple days, but it scares me because I'm so protective of him lol. She does have a pup around the same age though and about the same size :-) hers is a little maltipoo named dash and he's very cute. I am hoping by Monday at least I will be able to walk some, crossing my fingers and toes my knees start feeling a bit better :-) |
Wow how scary. I am glad you are on the mend. Gizmo understands. I had back surgery and was not able to pick up Galen, play with him or even take him out for potty training. I felt like such a bad mommy. But everyone that was with me would pick him up so I can get lots of kisses from him. Send lots of good thoughts your way for a speedy recovery |
I sincerely hope you get well soon. I think just talking to them lets them know how much you love/care for them. Have you tried rubbing his belly with your foot? I end up having to do that sometimes b/c I can't bend down right now. I figure it's better than no contact at all. LOL And I can relate to your guilty feeling. I got into somewhat of a bad car accident last week and had to take a week off work. I'm still only able to work few hours a day. Obviously, walking Magnus was out of the question so poor Magnus haven't gone for walks in 1.5 weeks now. Since Gizmo is being "taken care of", I think the most important thing now is for you to get better. :) The faster you recover, the faster you'd be able to pet and ruffles that adorable head! |
im sorry get better soon, just try to love on him they know alot about what is going on |
Wow! So sorry to hear about your fall:( So glad that Gizmo was smart enough not to taste the glass. Positive thoughts coming your way and I hope that you are feeling better real soon!!! When I'm not feeling well, my Bailey seems to know and snuggles with me. Perhaps Gizmo will learn the same during this difficult time.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork All the best!!!! |
My goodness. What a terrible incident! All I can say is Gizmo will be fine. I'm sure he has no doubt of your love and although he may be a bit puzzled by it all, he knows something is wrong with Mommy. He is just so young that he hasn't learned how to turn off or redirect the zoomie/rottweiler energy yet. Like Jeanie said, I had to smile that your first instinct was to protect Gizmo but then I had this horrible visual of you laying in the floor, hand bleeding out, using your other hand to hold the squirming furball up off the floor until you could move, instead of trying to staunch the flow of blood. That right there is love at it's purest level. Praying for your rapid recovery and remember, Gizmo will be fine. You take care of YOU. Let others take care of Gizmo. You just rest and love on him as well as you can between zoomie/rottweiler episodes. |
Wow what a horrible thing to have happened... My goodness I sure hope that you feel better soon. I would suggest giving Gizmo lots of extra loving and cuddles while you are bound and can not do you typical daily activities. Im sure he recognizes that something isn't the same and will no doubt be right by your side the entire time until you are back to yourself and your regular routine. {{HUGS}} |
I sure hope you get better. That sure was a misfortune. Although things like this may occur. It is simply an accident. It is not your fault. Please take it easy. I will send lots of prayers you way.! Even the simple things can mean a lot to your pet. Such as singing, Using your foot to do a belly rub. Or just lots of cuddles when able.! Hope things get better soon for you.! XO |
If you think he really needs the entertainment and exercise then maybe visiting your daughter and her dog would do him and you some good. You wouldn't feel so guilty and I'm sure playing with another pup for a couple of days will wear the little guy out for a while at least. As long as he will stay with his training while he is gone it might be a good plan. I know knees can sometimes take a few days to heal up after a fall like yours and the wounds on your hands need time to heal as well. Hope your feeling better soon. |
oh my, I feel so awful for you, how scary and how much pain you must be in. Hopefully your daughter can spend a few days and her pup will keep your's so busy he will look forward at the end of the day to just lay on the couch with you. Also dogs seem to be able to understand when one is hurt. |
I am so sorry to hear of your fall, pain, cuts, stitches and bruises. When ever I am down in bed (due to health) for a few days, I just let my girls spend the time with me there. Some how they pick up on my problems and are less rowdy on these days and I can play fetch from the bed with them and they are quiet satisfied. They also seemed to just want to cuddle with me more when I am not feeling well. I think they are very caring little guys. I am praying for you. |
Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers. Today I actually took my splint off my fractured hand to pet him fr a few minutes, although my fingers were all still taped together from the fracture and cuts between them (wow my little finger and ring finger is completely black from bruising :-( ), I know I shouldn't have, but it was worth it lol. I hurried and wrapped it back up with the splint before hubby got back :-) , then Gizmo actually laid down with me on the couch for about 15 mins., before he went into I want o play Rottweiler mode haha. It's amazing how such little things can make you feel so much better :-) I also got a ton of puppy kisses while he was laying down with me. I wish I could play fetch, but with both hands hurting and out of commission it's impossible :-( I also had my husband put one of his beds next to the couch with one of my shirts on it, so he has my smell near him, and he's been napping only there all day :-) hubby is taking him to the park right now to play with all his friends right now :-) |
Hehehe while hubby is putting on his buddy belt, I told him Gizmo looks homeless because he's so disheveled from not being brushed since Tuesday :-) |
I hope you get better soon!! I got one of those little laser pointers for my cats and much to my surprise, my little guy likes to chase it too!! It saves me from having to chase him around to play because while he likes to play fetch, he's not good with returning his toys. Maybe Gizmo would like it too. I got mine for a buck at the dollar store!! It's been a life saver on nights where I just don't have the energy to play. I can sit on the couch while Ricky zooms around the living room!!! You'd think him or the cat would get tired of chasing something they can never catch, but so far so good! |

Nine years ago my left knee went out from under neath me yet again, this time it stretched my ACL, and I was on crutches for 6 months. I ended up getting both knees replaced at the age of 36. Megan, who had several health issues, and was not a long walks kind of girl, just snuggled up next to me for the time leading up to the knee replacements and the recovery times. She never played fetch, and the only toy she liked was a toilet paper tube with the ends folded in, she was an untrained therapy dog, for me at least, and handled everything very well, but she wasn't a puppy. Gizmo, I'm sure is a little confused about why you can't do what you normally do with him, and why you have all the unusual stuff on you, but he loves you and can sense that something isn't right. Gina loves the laser pointer, only problem is she can see the light at the pointer and on the floor, so when she can't get a hold of the light on the floor she goes after the pointer it's self. Just keep loving on him, but don't risk hurting yourself any further, and he'll be ok and still give you kisses. Hope for a speedy recovery, and don't feel guilty, you did everything you could for him not to get hurt. Cheers Quad:aimeeyork |
Hoping that you are continuing to recover nicely and feeling more comfortable. Don't worry about Gizmo's hair-combing. A couple of bad hair days never hurt one of them! |
