I know someone can help me out So me and my fiancee just bought a new house that we are completely redoing (so exciting!). We are getting married March 15th and we are hoping everything will be done by then. Right now during the day my girls stay in my bathroom but in this new house we have enough bedrooms that we are making one of them the girls room to stay in during the day. Lilly Anne is very destructive so I am going to get a big pen to put in the room for them to stay in because I don't trust her to be just in a room without supervision. I trust Ellie because she never messes anything up but I feel bad letting Ellie run free and locking Lilly Anne up so I just put both of them together. My problem is though Ellie can jump and climb over EVERYTHING. I am 5 foot 11 and a half inches and I can stand and put my arms out and she can jump in them. I tried a baby gate that was 4 and a half feet tall and she sailed right over it. I have not found a pen or a gate yet that will keep her in. Any suggestions on what kind I could get for their room? |
what if you did a screen door that you could lock from the outside or something along that line...not sure it just came to my mind. |
What do you mean by destructive? Does she chew molding or something? If you are building and have a room for them why not just put a cheap lineoleum over the subfloor for now and let them have free rein? Then you can close the door, have no furniture in there except for their bed and food bowls, potty pads and some toys? Sounds like doggy heaven! When she is able to have free rein some day then lay carpet down or hardwood. Just close the door. We keep Jess in the mudroom when we are out. She has everything she needs and some run room..:) |
That little stinker LOL :D I had one of those and the screen is a great idea - we had to back the outside of the screen with a decorative type of design work on it so she could not push the screen out. It is important that the decorated design. to be on the side they can climb on due to the chance of falls. The screened door made her feel less closed in. Good Luck! They do test us, don't they! |

Yes she chews and tears up everything through everything. The bedroom already had gorgeous scalloped molding and marble floors and I can't make myself take all that up because of the dogs. Like I said Ellie never messes anything up but if you give Lilly Anne free rein of the room she will tear through everything but I don't think it is fair to leave Ellie out and leave Lilly Anne locked up. |

Not to mention I have had a heck of time potty training her and she goes to the bathroom everywhere. I am about ready to pull my hair out with her! lol |
So are you looking for a pen or a gate? It sounds like you need a large pen since they will need a potty area as well as beds and dishes and room for toys. Most pet supply stores have crates for large dogs. Example: Precision Pet Black Great Crate 4000 | Overstock.com I personally don't think caging them all day is a good idea. Especially for a dog that already has behavioral issues. But if this is your only solution then getting them the largest area you can possibly give them would be best. You could put a cage like this anywhere in the home. Shutting them in a cage in a bedroom is quite isolating for a dog. Isolating dogs can lead to stress that will eventually lead to more issues. |

They are not caged all day. And I have been looking for a big pen, like I said I can't find one Ellie can't jump out of. They are not crated and have never been crated and are definitely not isolated I just need something to put them in while I go to classes without roaming throughout the house. |
Could you modify some sort of lid for the pen that you already have? I know I saw a post on here a few days ago that had some great suggestions on how to make a top so that the dogs cannot climb out. |

If you get a gate with vertical bars, she cannot climb. I love the Dream Baby gates. Here is one that I have and love: ![]() |

I like the gates but Ellie doesn't climb things, she just takes a big running start and leaps. Its so crazy how high she can jump. And the pen is just like a travel fabric pen. it works okay but I am really looking to get a bigger one for them. I have never though of doing that though so that might be something I could try if I can't find anything! |
My little one has springs in his butt too!! I have a big exercise pen that I wanna say is 48 inches tall that I have set up in my kitchen for both of the boys. It has a door on it so I can let them in and out and it's got way more room than a crate does. I can fit their crates, beds, bowls, toys, potty pads and all in there and they still have room to roam. If you want to make it bigger, you can buy 2 of them and hook them together. Thus far, Ricky has never scaled it....and he's scaled both of the babygates I have. Ironically, he won't go over the baby gates if I am not here. He will only jump over them when I am trying to keep away from me when I am doing something he shouldn't get into!! LOL!! |
