Do your Yorkies have muzzles? if yes, which type? Hi, my Yorkies does not have a muzzle, but I consider bying it, which type of muzzle is the best in your opinion? how does the "quiet" training command work? My roommate got a muzzle for her 1 year old yorkie and puts it on every morning when the dog is barking and she wants to sleep. It seems cruel to me but my roomie says I'm too soft. The other day i found the yorkie's eyes smashed shut in the muzzle too which was concerning to me as were the above comments about airway being constricted. I want to show my roomie that there are other tecniques to stop the barking. And the funny thing is that the dog doesn't ever wake me up barking when my roomie stays the night away. she gently stratches my door or waits til i wake up. thoughts? |
Pet corrector. To my surprise it works. All it is is compressed air. If you have any around or buy that it cost less. Or look at Pet corrector. When they bark spray it when they don't see. It scares them. Moki goes to his bed everytime. That and I use "quiet" he will stop. A mussel won't keep him from barking. They are made so they can eat,drink,bark ect.... Just protects from biting.So that pretty much won't work. But the can air might? JME |
To train quiet began when they are already calm. Sit next them and say quite, then give them a treat. Then you add stimulus, have someone knock or ring the doorbell, when the bark gently say quiet, the moment the stop barking say yes or use a clicker and give treat. Keep doing this and the pup will learn that he gets treat when he stops barking. Teaching other basic commands also help, such as wait, sit, down, and stay |
I wouldn't use a muzzle myself at all. It is so easy to teach them not to bark or bite or go after other dogs that I can't ever envision using one. Dogs want to please and it's much easier to train them than to deal with the results of not training, such as using a muzzle. |

I agree - train your dog the quiet command. Does your dog nuisance bark? Personally, my Tatiana never nuisance barks. Whenever she barked, there was a darn good reason (someone comes to the door, doorbell rings, there was a strange sound, etc.). I always tell her,"Good bark." Honestly, I never had to chastise her to be quiet. It was always "good bark." |
My Riley is a yorkie-poo. He is a lovebug until you try to groom him. My groomer uses a muzzle when she grooms him. He acts crazy and bites. He's 8lbs and needs two people to groom him. Rita is the only groomer that will even take him |
Any issue that would cause someone to think they need a muzzle can be addressed by proper training. They younger you start the better but you can teach an old dog new tricks. Yorkies are very emotional dogs. If they are scared or their owner does not know how to properly communicate with them they can develop problems. Gaining the dog's trust with lots of praise and consistent positive reinforcement is the best way to deal with issues. Someone who cannot get their self out of bed in the morning to properly take care of the dog has no business having one. |
