new Yorkie pet whines HELP! Hi all, Just got our new family pet, Cody, who is 11 weeks old. We've had him for about 3 days and have crated for potty training etc....but now he is beginning to whine in it. What do i do? I want to take him out and pet him but yet I dont want to spoil him either! Any suggestions????? Thanks, Codys dad |
Puppies like babies need attention! They will cry if they are lonely, cold, hungry or just want to be held. Playing with your puppy and letting him sleep or holding doesn't spoil him! It creates trust and a bond that can't be broken! As far as I am concerned......a crate is a useful tool for when you can't watch them, but please don't always keep it crated just to prevent potty accidents! |

I had to learn the hard way - if you take your pup out everytime they whine they expect it and do it more and more. It's hard but you have to let them stay in it until they are quiet and then you can take them out to cuddle. Mine are in theirs during the night and when I work they are in an expen. I have a neighbor who comes and takes them out several times during the day. Keep up the good work. |
If he's eaten, he's been out and went potty, and now needs a rest please make sure he is in his cage for his own protection. A regular cage is best not a carrier. He is going to whine simply because he is in a strange home and has been taken away from his litter mates. It helps to have some stuffed animals for him to sleep with. Preferably ones that have the mothers and litter mates scent on them. They will take the place of his litter mates and will help calm him down. Also make sure he has a nice warm blanket for warmth and that the cage is in the same room as the family. Make sure that he has full view of the family but sometimes for nap time it helps if you toss a light weight blanket over the top so that he will calm down and not worry so much about who is doing what. |
Being on his own after snuggling with mommy and his litter mates is not an easy adjustment - he's just a baby. My friend just got a new pup and has a "Snuggle Puppy" in her crate at night and she loves it. Maybe you can give it a try.  Amazon.com: Snuggle Pet Products Snuggle Puppies... |

The vet also has some calming spray to spray on blankie that smells like mama. What happened to me ....I crate trained Zoey to stay on main level of house in pen all nite for the first 2 months we had her. But she was still getting me up too early in the morning. All they want is you. I placed her in cage beside me all nite and got up in the middle of night to pee her till she held it at 5 months, then it was in my bed she wanted just as close to me as she could get. I couldn't resist. And if she has to go she happily wiggles and kisses me awake to take her potty, which isn't very often. I placed some waterproof baby crib sheets on my bed but she has never had an accident. Sleeping with them really gets you to know them better too. Their little sounds and habits and maybe you will notice if something is wrong sooner. Now she sleeps till 10! Good luck |
If you take them out when they whine then they will know that if they whine they will get attention/let out. I only crate trained Callie at night and the first week was terrible but I only took her potty when she would wake up whining and then back in the crate she went. Make sure that the crate is where the pup can see you. |
Have you thought of trying an xpen instead of a crate? I tried a crate the first night with Gizmo and he hated it. I got an xpen, where he had enough room to sleep, potty and play at night, and ever since he has not whined at all. |
Oh just give in and spoil him. That's why God made yorkies!! |

Everyone here is on a schedule....we get up at around the same time every day except weekends...we go down for a nap daily from noon to around 4pm....everyone know this schedule and they expect to be crated with the crate covered with a sheet like a bird cage, from 10pm until 8am....they then get up and are with me in whatever room I happen to be busy in...never left unattended, as they are like mischevious kids and what one doesnt think of, the others will....they then go back down at around noon for nap time...they al;l know this is going to happen and they expect it....they will even go lookig for a bed if I am running late and dont get them crated at noon....they get up at 4pm and we finish the day....no when it is time to get up, they will whine to let me know I must have forgotten them under the sheet in the crate!, but they KNOW the schedule, and they go to their new owners on this schedule....they tweek the times to fit in their own schedules, and it works out great! SCHEDULES!!!! |
