My pup won't come to me HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Zoe is a 2 1/2 month old baby boy. He does not come to anybody when called. When anybody tries to pick him up, his initial reaction is to run away or step back even from ME! At first I thought he just wasn't used to me but he def knows that I'm his mommy and my bf his daddy but will not voluntarily come to us or let us pick him up. Is this weird? Also, his nose and paws are always cold even when its really warm, should I be worried? Please let me know what you think. I would greatly aprreciate it. Thank you and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! |

Bending and reaching over a dog's head to pick it up is considered rude in the dogs eyes. Try getting on the floor or lower to a squat. Call or reach for the pup under the belly not over the head. As for coming when called. first never call a pup to scold or disciplines or do anything they do not like to them. Why come if bad things happen. Only call for good fun stuff, if it is not good, go and get . Then I try him on a long line and attach it to a harness so he can not go far, and call his name if he looks at you toss a treat. Next time call again and hope he steps to you a step and toss a treat. At some point he will come over and want the treat out of your hand Bonus treats many many. Then start again at some point it will click I get a treat and loving if I come. The other way is to get people on the floor in a circle and call pup from one to another hand out treats as he gets to the one that called. It teaches the name and also can work for come. Then take it on the road as dogs do not generalize so teach come outside in a safe yard or on a long line. Move it out to the street and from room to room in the house. Joy |

Smudgers nose is always cold and wet anyway. Not sure about the paws though!! Happy New Year :) |
Also, his nose and paws are always cold even when its really warm, should I be worried? Some of my puppies at this age also had cold feet and ears and it was because they were COLD. I put tiny hand crocheted sweaters or a mans sock on them and got them warm and they were fine. |
I would be concerns if the ears are cold and look black or dark not the nice pinkie brown. That indicates them being cold at least in my girl. Joy |
A cold, wet nose is one sign of good health in dogs and cats. However, even a healthy pet can have a warm dry nose on occasion. And really sick pets can also have cold, wet noses. What does this all mean? Simply that any one indicator of health is not 100% accurate all the time. Sick pets with cold noses should be seen by your veterinarian. By the same token, pets with warm, dry noses that are showing other symptoms such as lethargy or are not eating should also be seen by a doctor. www.doctordog.com BTW-I get down on all fours with my head close to the floor and Baby comes running like a bat out of heck! I usually don't even have to say anything. |
Thank you for your input!! Zoe seems fine and healthy but I just noticed that his nose and paws are always cold. This makes me feel much better. I will try my best not to intimidate him and try the string with treats to see if he comes to me. Again, Thank You!! |
I have two small dogs and had a third - none of them would come to me when I call them. I am beginning to think it is a small dog thing. My neighbors have the same problem with their small dogs. And - everyone I know with a big dog has no problem at all. I am going to work hard to get my little Yorkie to come when I call him. I know treats work - but occasionally, believe me, they will want to stay outside or wherever they are and skip the treat. Whatever - I think it is a real problem with smaller breeds. But - I'm going to work on it!!! Carol Jean |
I taught "come" similiar to how Joy recommended. I started with Joey a foot or 2 away where he could see and smell the treat in my hand. "Joey, come!" Naturally, he came immediately to get that treat. Progress to across the room. Lather, rinse, repeat many times! Then start calling from the next room over and gradually increase the distance that the pup has to come. Repeat, repeat, repeat. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving him a treat every time that he comes on the first request! |
