Is once spoiled FOREVER spoiled? I would first like to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR filled with happiness. My parents and in laws came to visit us in Europe for the holidays. I made it clear to both set of parents that they are NOT allowed to feed Twinkie (she is 16weeks old now) when we are eating but I guess it was like talking to a brick wall. The second day my mother in law (bless her) fed Twinkie as we were having dinner and it drove me off the wall . Anyway, before they came over although Twinkie was still very young she was well behaved. Mow she is out of control and when we sit for dinner she expects food and starts begging. I was wondering if Twinkie will be a forever begger now! :( |
Not if you don't continue to feed her! She will get the idea if you work on it with her. Pay her no attention.... give her no rewards... She will figure it out. |

I would pop her in her kennel if she is kennel trained or teach a down wait while your eat,(settle in one spot with a good chew toy.) Also while she is settled someone can get up to take her a treat and reward her behavior. I also have another chat with the parents again. -- For myself, I have firmly maintained my dogs, my rules full stop or she can not come and you can not play with her, if you do not follow them. That is because for her health and safety I need to know what she is feed and what she is doing if she gets hurt or sick. Plus in my girls case, they could get bit if they do not follow the rules. Your Parents feed your girl something they do not know will make her sick like grapes and you do not know they feed her that be not so good. Joy |

Did I read that you are a psychologist??? I'll bet you can answer your question as well or better than any of us can. Just go back to treating Twinke the way you did before your parents visited. She will certainly try begging for a while, but, if you don't give her any food, she will soon give up. Interestingly - I am very bad about feeding my dogs when I eat. And, of course, they beg for food when I eat. But when my 84-year-old, elderly uncle visits, he eats very slowly and ignores them until he's done and then they get his leftovers. Both my dogs learned his routine very quickly. They never beg when he is eating and quietly lie by his feet and wait until he's done. Sometimes dogs are smarter than people - right? Carol Jean PS: The next time your parents visit - put your dogs some place away from the table --- and tell your parents that it is their fault!! |
I always tell company that if they feed him table food and he gets sick or the runs they're cleaning it up. Works everytime... no one ever feeds him table food. I also tell them where his treats are and explain that it's like giving candy to a child. It's not fun or nice to feed them junk! |
