HELP! 2 week old puppy hind leg issues! My runt is having a leg issue and I wanted KNOWLEDGEABLE help. I do work for a vet, and she was seen today for the leg but he wanted me to see the bigger boss on monday. I'm worrying a lot and want to know if other people have experienced this? The back left leg is to the side and the knee is where it seems to be the issue. My boss (the vet) said it didnt seem broke or that it was hurting her. Anyone? |
There are only so many possibilities did he check for any of them? How did he determine it wasn't broke? Was an xray done? I would save yourself some money and go to an orthopaedic specialist....Legge's Perthes comes to mind....or an injury. I sure hope the poor pup isn't in pain? I'm sorry your pup and you are going through this, I've been there and back a few times and I know how your worrying. |
No it doesnt seem broke and more seems like something she was born with and I didn't notice till now because she just started wiggling around. She is still 4oz at 2 weeks old. Have you heard of this before? He didn't do an exam because I ran there ( he was in appts) and I caught him in his office before they closed. My other boss is very good so Ill wait to see what she says just wanted some advice on here until then :/ |
Was she born like this or did it just happen? |
It can occasionally happen, due to the position the baby was in the womb. I had a baby born once that looked like both hind legs were almost on backwards.....I was sooooo upset! My vet examined the baby and said it was probably a positional thing and would go away as baby got older. But I still contacted breeder friends and they all said the same thing can happen.....and that is exactly what happened As the baby got older and grew, legs straightened right out and there was no problem at all! Just watch baby, you can take that little leg and do range of motion exercises on it, and it should resolve.....at 6-8 weeks, if there is still an issue, a vet visit with exam and xrays is warranted. |
Thank you for writing me ! You know I'm now thinking she was born like this. Can I send anyone a picture? I can be texted at 5743102202. She has her appt tomorrow but I guess I'm just thinking the worst. I pray it is something that fixes it self |
there is something called swimmers legs, where the dog is born with back legs that don't function quite right. I have seen a few threads about it on YT and I am sure you can goggle it, the thread had pictures on it as well. With consistant types of therapy and massage I believe the breeder was able to correct it. good luck |
I just side to look up info, it can actually effect all legs and might be more extreme that what you pup is experiencing but it seems like there are different level of the condition, good change you pup does not have this, but I though it would be good to rule it out and be aware of it Flat (Swimmer) Puppies Symptoms and Treatments in Dogs | Pet Health at Wiki-pet.com |
Okay thanks a lot everyone for all the help |
I hope she grows out of it please keep us updated. |
Babies' Back Legs Sounds like she was all bunched up in the uterus and the leg muscles couldnt develop. I had the same thing happen and this is about the age I noticed mine. Put a bath cloth (dry) under her belly and support her in it for a few minutes several times a day. Just suspend her enough so that her legs can actually touch the floor. This will sometimes spur them to work harder to exercise them. You can do simple exercises with her lying face up on your lap and just massage and play with her little legs. Hopefully yours will be this simple and she will pick up on holding herself up when her leg muscles are stronger. Good luck. Would love to see a pic. |
The other dr is still unsure :(. How do I post her X-ray here ? |
If your vet is unable to diagnose with a reasonable degree of confidence, I would be taking the pup to an ortho specialist....if this is anything more than just a uterine position issue, the sooner you get started with corrective therapy to correct the problem, the better your chances are of successful resolution of the issue. |
Can you scan the xray and save it as a pdf then post it here? |
Yes but how do I post it? She is my vet and also my boss because I work there so I am confident in her it\'s just that she\'s so tiny. She is 1/3 of the other puppies. Still only charting to be 1lb 14 oz grown. She is going to consult in neonatal vet friends. As far as the towel thing id like to do something like that but it is that she is so tiny I\'d have to use a Kleenex or something of the sort lol |
