Anyone have any experience training a deaf yorkie? I recently rescued a yorkie that was supposedly 1.5 yrs and a puppy mill dog that was only used for breeding. I was told he spent his life in a cage only moved to other cages to breed. The first day I got him I found out that he was deaf which was disappointing but OK, because as soon as I first held him I fell in love. Yesterday I brought him to get his teeth cleaned and was informed by the vet that he was missing 11 teeth and he is at least 6 yrs. old. He had to remove 6 teeth and treat him for periodontal disease. I was so disappointed to find out that I had been duped into thinking this was a young dog. The only reason that I wanted another dog is because my other dog is getting old so I believed a young dog would help me deal with it. I love my new dog and would never give him up but I'm so sad to know that he is also an older dog. But my question is has anyone had experience training a deaf dog? |
Congratulations on your new boy! And thank you so much for rescuing a mill dog, they are so deserving of a good life at whatever age they are released. Get him on some very high quality food and probiotics to help his digestion, as good grain free food may be the key to long life. I don't have any experience with deaf dogs, but I have a friend with a deaf bigger dog-some kind of boxer mix. She is a member of a deaf dog forum, somewhat similar to this YT forum, she says, so I will ask her about the name of the forum. They might be helpful as it encompasses all breeds, commonality being deafness. |
I am/was. I had a deaf Biewer. Hand Signals...Not sign language down like your bowing with two hands, traffic cop push for stop...stomp a foot on floor and pick them up when they do something wrong, after awhile you develop that communication. A deaf dog forum? I'd love to see it too! |

So WONDERFUL that you rescued this poor thing and are giving him so much love. YOU must be a very special person. Sorry, I am no help though. I do know that dogs really watch your movement. Mine are not deaf, but all I have to do is point and they know what I mean. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU BOTH! |

Mine never hear or listen to me anyway! hand signals and things that cause vibration on the floor, tapping to get their attention, try lights on or off... lots of ways... be creative. Six is not that old... I got my guy at 5 years old... he'll be 17 in December (hopefully)... that's a lot of years we've had together. I think 10 -12 is when they are considered 'senior'... |
