Sleepless Nights Our Yorkshire Terrier is three and a half years old.He was very easy to house train and is quite intellegent.Until recently he always slept in his own bed in the kitchen with no problems. Two weeks ago i had an overnight stay in hospital and since then when i turn off the lights in the kitchen he stats to cry very loudly until I carry his bed upstairs to the landing outside our bedroom. Anybody have any ideas about what caused this change and how my wife and I might solve this many Thanks Jackied:confused: |
It sounds like he's worried something will happen to you. Poor thing. Not sure what you could do besides let him cry it out. Just give him extra love before bed if you do that. |
Not sure what changed but dogs are social creatures so I'm sure he just wants to be with you. |
I think he is just missing you. Can you keep him by your bedroom? He's happier and you get to sleep. |
It's more natural for dogs to sleep with their pack than separately. Likely your absence overnight upset or shocked him in some fundamental way and he's maybe just reacting to the anxiety he's feeling from that and needing his pack near at night and not down the hall so far. In the wild or left to their own devices, dogs will pile up and sleep or sleep touching some part of another pack member for solace and a sense of safety. I'd allow him to sleep as near me as possible to try to meet his needs now and not just those of the humans. Our needs matter but so do the dogs when they are beloved family members. My dog actually sleeps right beside me on my pillow and it's not all that comfortable, especially in warm weather, or that roomy as I like, but he needs to sleep there for some reason so............................... |
Allie cried and cried too for weeks.... she just wanted to be in our bed. SO, that's where she sleeps....both my girls sleep in their snuggle sacs on the bed. They stay put all night. EVERYONE gets a good nights sleep. Maybe try putting his bed on the floor by your bed...... |
You could also try leaving a pretty night light on, I have one that changes every couple seconds, and it has water with an ocean scene in it. I also put on soft soothing music at night for him so he hears noise that is soothing and makes him sleep. He sleeps in the living room in an xpen, because I have a 2 story town home that has an open staircase, and I'm scared he would go through the railing and hurt himself :-) I also have 3 kitties who will not accept any closed doors in my house lol. So I got Gizmo a nice comfy xpen from richell, and it's big enough for his bed, food and water, as well as his potty pad holder. With the night light and the soothing music, he sleeps right through the night without. Sound. So if sleeping in your bedroom can't work, maybe a night light and some soft music will calm him. It sounds like he may be a bit anxious from the experience? |
Was the overnight stay at the hospital b/c you were sick/hurt? I've seen shows where the owner got sick/hurt. After recovery and coming home, their dog(s) won't leave the owner's side. I also have a friend who's dog is on full alert when her hubby's not home at night. I guess it's his way of protecting his mama. |
