Sappy paws? Hi everyone! Kaji and I recently moved from a tiny apt in downtown LA, to a nice house with a little backyard. Lots of nature, and lots of things for Kaji to explore. The only problem were having now is sap, or sticky tree gunk greeting stuck on his little pads or on the hair between the pads on his feet. His little footsore are such a mess! Any ideas how to prevent, or easily remove the sticky stuff? |
Congrats on the move..but as for the sap I am not really sure. I wonder if coconut or olive oil would remove it? |

Surprisingly Peanut Butter should work if the coconut or olive oil does not. I use that to remove gum and other sticky residue. I can't think of anything else that would be more natural and chemical free. Hope it works. They also have doggy boots. I saw some at Petco. They look like little balloons. That might be something to look into. That way the feet will stay protected... Glad you liked the move. Sounds like a great transition.!!! |
You could try a citrus oil, from the rind, it removes glue and other sticky gunk. Good luck, and congrats on the move. Cheers Quad:aimeeyork |
Congrats on the move! How fun!! There is a certain time of year where we have this tree that drops little sappy things (I know, I am so technically, and plant-savvy) and they are a PAIN... they were getting stuck to Jackson's feet all the time. I think I used baby oil, actually, after reading about it on the internet, and soaked his feet in the bath... Rubbing alchohol or hand sanitzer may work too. |

Someone posted this problem sometime back and someone had a good remedy. I just don't remember what it was. There is a product called Musher's Secret. It is a salve that they put on sled dog's to protect their feet but it is good for lots of other issues. You don't have to worry about snow or salt on the ground where you are but it would work good for protecting his feet from sap as well. I know they sell it on Amazon and some other pet suppliers sell it. I agree that cocoanut oil may be good for removing it. It is very healthy for your dog to lick in case there is some left over.. Maybe someone else will come up with the other sap remedy. |
My dog got covered with sap last spring. He has really long hair. His beard felt like it was sculpted with super glue ala an 80's Mohawk. I remembered I used mineral oil to take sap off my hands at Christmas, so I drenched his hair and gently worked it in until I felt the sap break up, then I washed it out with a little bit of dawn dish soap. It worked great! I took him to his groomer the next day to give him a professional bath and she said she couldn't find any traces of the sap at all. |
