Short hair Do you think I should cut Jilly's hair. The groomer said. no. They just got back from the groomer. |
I think the better question is: Do YOU want to cut Jilly's hair? :) Can we see a pic of her? |
Depends on your dogs type of hair! I've seen some Yorkies with thick almost fluffy hair that looks cute when cut short...look like little fluffy teddy bears! Then, you have the Yorkies, like my little 5 lb. male, who have fine, thin, silky hair--like a young human child of two might have. I have to keep Taffy's body coat just a simple "coat length" 3 inches below his body, curving up a bit as I trim toward the rear legs. I even-up any stray hair on his legs, but I don't like the way he looks if his "leg hair" is cut too short, it makes his legs look thin! I trim carefully under tummy to same length as the outside coat. I shorten hair around his rump so no bits of "poo" can cling under his tail! I loved Bows; he (and my hubby) hate them! Taffy WOULD always succeed in using both paws to tug his bows off when at home--ouch! I finally said to myself, oh well, he's a family pet, and I studied calendar & magazines of "Yorkies with bangs"--not too short, but so he can see well..they are best angled from center of forehead back to side over outer eye. I leave the hair on top of his head longer and the sides of his face longer and his beard longer. But, he doesn't get to grow the LONG hair of Show Yorkies, I'd never keep all those fine tangles out! He likes his sweaters on, if my hubby has the furnace set back in fall & winter. (Floors are much cooler than up where we humans are..) I actually let his coat get a bit longer in warm weather, because he can get snarls from running in his cool weather sweaters..so that's when I part the top of his body hair, comb down smooth on each side, and keep bottom length no more than 3" longer than his underbody. I use his round-tip dog scissors to comb straight downward from top of his back sliding to the ends of his hair, he likes this sensation...no more pulled hair, because if I hit a snarl, then I just snip through while sliding down toward floor..no painful tugging on hair! Taffy got used to scissors when young! |
Short hair. If you look in my album the set of four pics shows them after their haircut last night. Piper has thick wavy hair and really looks cut in the shorter cut. But Jilly has long straight hair and it is fine. My groomer said Jilly would not looks the same as Piper. Solo she cut some of the length off Jilly. I love the long show coat. But it is a lot of work. Look at my pics in my album. |
Shorter hair is a lot easier to take care of. I have Teeka in a semi-long cut and Tatiana and Max are shorter. They have a fluffly coat. Tatiana is more of a puppy cut w/ some beard. I cut their hair myself and prefer some fluff! I can post a picture if you want. |
Yes I would love to see the pics. |
Recent pic I am going to try to put the recent pics from last night. This after our return from the groomer. |
Album Oh well didn't work. Just check out my album in my profile . |
3 Attachment(s) Here are some pictures of my three..... Tatiana is the first picture, Teeka is second and Max, who we keep the shortest. |
I looked at your profile but saw no album. I am so lame getting around this website. |
You can cut Jillie's hair, just not as short as Piper's. My Momo has soft cottony hair & I like using the #7FC blade on him & the other 3 who all has silky hair gets cut w/the #4FC or #5Fc (in the summer) blades. For blades, the higher the #, the shorter the cut. If the silky ones gets cut w/the #7FC blade, they will look like they have very short hair, almost look shaved. I like leaving a little bit of hair on their body, it protects them from the sun. It can get pretty hot & humid here in CA & I do grow their hair in the cooler months to keep them warm. To cut or not...on your own! If you want to try out a bit of trimming on your own, now that she's gone to the groomer, you can try to keep some photos handy and when she begins to get just a bit "fluffy" or "shaggy", try to do just a little bit to even places back up. Don't wait until she is too long, or you may not have any previous shape to follow. You Don't want to do too much at first...you're just getting the feel of it. I got a small palm-sized razor to trim down away from Taffy's eyes and under & around his paws; I got brave and do the top 1/3 of his ears...if you like that look. Never go up the side edges of ears with a razor, just stay on the flat part of ear with the razor flat against it. If you see stray hairs, it's safer just trimming edges w/ round tipped scissors. GOOD LUCKK! |
Cutting hair. I want to thank you all for the advice. Only yorkie lovers would understand how hard it is to make decisions about our beloved pups. |

All my guys go to the Groomer three times a year. Each are very short clips save for this next one, which I let go a little longer because of the cooling weather. I don't show them, and take them Hunting almost every day. They get muddy and wet when they try to catch a Frog or Snake along the Bayou. One would think that if one had a Yorkie, they should allow their Coat to grow out, but... I could care less about that. Owning a Yorkie and the experience of that fellowship, is FAR past their appearance... IT'S AN ADVENTURE ! |
Profile Does anyone else see my album in my profile. Maybe I need to click on a button. Public profile is where the album is,right! Remember I am a newbie, too. |
Anything else that makes me happy! Seeing my yorkies all spruced up and looking their best! Each to his own! |
1 Attachment(s) I can totally relate to your situation. My Barney is 11.5 inches tall and barely weighs 5 pounds. He looks malnourished, but the vet assures me he is not. I cut his puppy coat away and he looked terrible. His legs looked like little toothpicks. It is now growing out and I do not plan to have it cut short again. Fortunately, his hair is very silky and rarely tangles. I only give him a good brushing once a week on bath day and that does the trick. He gets a light going over a few times a week. We've only had to remove a few mats. In this photo, he's in the growing out phase. |
Hello, Becky I know how you feel! My little guy has the fine silky Yorkie "show hair" coat, but if it is cut short, he looks thin and his legs look skinny. He's only 5 1/4 pounds, and vet says he's very healthy. I just comb it out his hair and trim it myself. He has learned scissoms are nothing to be afraid of by now. I keep his hair 3" below his body and just even-up stray hair on his legs and short under his tail. His eyebross are trimmed into a neat rounded shingle over his eyes. I like his beard about 5-6 inches. After he has played, is when I will get him to lay on my lap, and I slide the round-tipped dog scissors (pet stores should have these) through his hair and just cut right through the snarls, pull loose hair gently away w/ fingers. Finish with a brush. Happy doggie! Did find a Palm-sized dog razor (made by Yellow Dog Co) at TJMaxx for $9.00 instead of $19, and I now trim his under paws and down away from his eyes with it. Can also trim the top 1/3 of his ears, but Don't put any razor going up the edges of doggie ears! Just keep razor flat on the flat flaps of ears, easy to do. Can trim little stray hair off edges w/ rounded scissors after if you want. The little razor makes a soft buzz, and now Taffy knows the razor doesn't hurt either, just tickles perhaps. It is not hard if you do different areas over a day or two! Don't make your pup sit or stand too long, give treats! |
I think your pups are adorable. She would look cute cut like the one in the second picture but it really depends on if you want her in full coat or not. |

Wet little Yorkies! Marilyn's after-bath-shot of Huey is so relaxed-looking. He must be waiting for his dryer to start-up, I bet! My hubby's first reaction to seeing Taffy after a bath was, "What happened? Half of the dog is gone!" Taffy was stretched out on his tummy on bath towels in the bathroom sink, happily waiting for the hair dryer to start when hubby saw him. (There are 'small dogs' under that hair I told my husband) Taffy loves to be dried...I keep running fingers of one hand through his hair, and he begins to doze. He even hates to stand up so I can finish his tummy...loves the towels & the finger combing! Happy baths, Huey! |
I say do it and if you don't like it, it grows back |
1 Attachment(s) I prefer a short hair cute, but I think either one would be cute! I keep my dogs hair cut short. I will attach a picture so you can see! |

Just here to say Huey is a doll! What a cute face! I like his length, but if OP wants to try something shorter, I like the look of a shorter body cut, with long legs and face hair. It looks easier to maintain, especially if you dress your kids & they still have that "fancy yorkie look" to them. I might try that on Billi next spring, we'll see. |
I love to see a bit of a beard. Last time, I trimmed off too much in August, sigh! Taffy lost his nice little 'Yorkie beard' that I had gotten so used to seeing. People would see him with his beard and say, "Oh, what a pretty Yorkie." After I cut it back, the people at my local pet store said, "What happened to his cute little beard?" Well, it's finally is growing back. This little guy hates bows and pulls them off + some hair. So he now has short, rounded bangs with longer hair on back of his head & on sides of his face. Looks good on him + he can see well. Have fun all you guys who cut your own pup's hair. It does grow back! |
