Question about neutered male....... I have a really dumb question...... Tatiana came into heat! She is small and I was trying to wait until she was bigger to get her spayed. She is around 2 1/2 pounds and 9 1/2 months. So my question......We have a fixed male, named Max.....will he try to breed her, even though he is neutered? So far, he is not showing any interest. Do I need to keep them separate? |
If he is neutered I believe it will be safe and you don't need to keep them apart. hopefully though others will chime in if I am off base. |
This is just what I've been told: If he was neutered like Tibbe, his testicles were removed and unless your dog's have regrown, I think she'll be safe around him but I think he still can have sex drive, tie with her. Unless the vet bungled the surgery or he regrew sperm-making testicles, no pregnancy could ensue. Still I would watch him around her and prevent attempts to mate since I've also been told mating can sometimes cause injury to the male or female. |
put a nappy on her |
Thanks for the advice! I will definitely keep them separated and watched at all times. I do put a diaper on her at night but she always seems to get it off. I will have to put more velcro to tighten it. |
Deb, at 9.5 mo. old, Tatiana may not get a whole lot bigger. She may gain a few oz. as she fills out, but I don't think she will gain significantly more. Do you? I'd start looking for a vet that specializes in extra small dog surgery. I too wanted to wait for Allie to grow more before spaying. She ended up retaining her entire set of puppy teeth. She was in pain, and couldn't eat. She topped out at exactly 2 pounds. We spayed while she was under for tooth removal. She did fine, but the vet said it was definitely considered micro surgery, and not all vets are qualified or comfortable. Also, the protocol is not the same. We kept her on iv longer to make sure the kidneys were well flushed. Hypoglycemia was also something the vet was very concerned about. Best wishes. |
My mother's neutered male did mate with her female. We were amazed but nothing happened - like pregnancy. Just put a pair of cute panties on her. |

Given the age/weight, I'd definitely wait till after She's a year old, there's no rush since your Male is altered. However, He may try to mount Her anyway, but it most likely will be a domination issue, and won't focus on a penetration, just Humping. ;) |
Now that she has her first heat, I will definitely wait after she is a year old to get her spayed. I will also make sure she is not mounted. She is my shadow and goes every where with me. When we do go somewhere, Max is kept in our basement bath because he like to mark, when we leave! |
Your dog may try to mate with your female. I've seen it happen wih my neutered male trying to mate with a female in heat at the dog park. (That's insane!!! Who brings a female in heat to a dog park?!) since you're not a breeder, and both your dogs are pets (as in inexperienced to the whole breeding thing) they can actually hurt themselves and it might be best to keep them separated just in case. |

Given all the other indicators of intelligence I've personally witnessed from this Breed, a reaction like that complements their amazing understanding of themselves and us. |
