Soon to be Yorkie mom needs help 3 Attachment(s) Hello, My name is Veronica and I am a soon to be Yorkie mom, my husband got me a yorkie for our 9th wedding anniversary which is on Sunday the 20 also the day we get to pick up our new puppy he will be 8 weeks and two days! Anyways I have a few questions for all of you experienced moms. We have not picked a name for him yet but had a few in mind they are: Trevor, Riley, Bailey & Sebastian, please help me pick a name, my children all like Trevor and my husband likes Riley but my husband says I should name him since he is my puppy. I am a stay at home mom and will be litter box training our puppy with the Purina second Nature dog litter and was wondering if any of you have used this system and did it work for you. The next question I have is what type of food do you/ did you feed your puppy? I have heard that Nutro Max puppy is good or Royal Canin 33, the breeder is currently feeding him Purina puppy chow which is definately going to change when he gets home. Also can any of you recommend how I should start feeding him, should I buy Puppy Chow since that is what she was feeding him to start? (I'de rather not because this is not my choice of food for him) I also found another thread where the woman was feeding her puppy Iams, Pedigree, & Eukanuba and claimed she had no problems and her Yorkie was in great health and his teeth were super clean. She would mix them all together and feed 3-4 times a day. |
welcome :) hello & welcome congrats on your new baby, You have to be so excited and waiting for the 20th. if it helps I feed my baby Eukanuba which he dosen't like too much but when I mix it with ceaser soft food and then he will go to town with it. you should buy what she feeds him, but normally she should send you home with a little bit,b(until you decide, which one u want for him) if you are going to change his food you have to do it gradually. you mix it with the one he eats now and day by day you add more and more of the new one ( example 1 cup of old food, add 1/4 of new food next day add more and more of the new) doing this little by little is should take about 3/5 days. this is so it dosen't upset his tummy. I hope this works.welcome and congrats :) I hope you find the right food for your baby and enjoy your new baby when you get him.. :congrats: |
Thanks so much on your reccomendation about how to gradually change the puppy's food I will definately be switching, we haven't bought any food yet because I cannot decide on what to feed him. I went to the pet store today and read the ingredients for Nutro Max puppy and heard that most vets recommend this type of food. |
maybe, I should give it a try too, like I said Nemo is not too excited about Eukanuba alone. then again he only eats when I'm next to him( I hated when he does it) I leave food out for him all day, even while am I work, He does not touch it until I get home and seat next to him, while he eats |
He is very cute :-) How old is he? Do you have any other photos? |
I'm trying to put other picture but my camera is not the best, pics are either too dark or too bright.. He is a little bigger now. still under 2 lbs. he is 1 1/2 lb and he will be 14 weeks Wed. My husband also found another yorkie in the streets. Wed night . I still have not found his owner. He is a cutie No name. I'm considering keeping him if I don't find owner, not sure yet since I already have 2 other dogs (with him it would be 4 dogs) 2 Yorkies & 2 Rottweilers. My Zoo I call it, |
WELCOME!!!! You will get alot of great info from the folks here....they have helped me alot! If you can, try to stick with dry food....they can easily fool you into thinking they are going to starve if you don't give in and give them some really tasty canned food. I think almost everyone has worried about their puppy eating and ended up giving some canned foods. But I have heard that dry kibble is better for their teeth...(and I have spent a FORTUNE $$$$$$$ on my greyhounds teeth over the past 8 years)....yorkies are prone to teeth problems later in life if not cared for. I spent the past month trying several different foods and kept running into a picky eater with runny poops. Finally, one lady told me just give her some good quality dry food and when she gets hungry...she will eat!! I worried for days about hypoglycemia....watched her like a hawk. Well, she DID get hungry and she DID finally eat the dry food. Lil Bit is 4 1/2 months old and just over 2 pounds (2# 2 oz)...I feed her Pro Plan with Eukanube petit..dry food with just a few drops of Iams Savory sauce (puppy sauce)....3 x day....she eats it up ...when she is hungry...if not she eats it later....I also keep dry food out at all times! |
I really like Sabastian!!! Thats the first time I've heard that name one here. I feed my pup science diet. I am changing to Royal Canin since I've heard so many good things about it. |
Hi, I too swithced from Science Diet to Royal Canine, my Yorkies like it much better. Conrats on your new pup. Happy Anniversary, we will be celebrating our first one on March 20th also. |
Hi, Congrats on your coming addition! What an awesome anniversary present! It seems like everyone feeds their pups in so many different ways. I know it seems overwhelming. Check out this thread http://yorkietalk.com/forums/showthr...ight=Authority It's how I decided to feed Authority Lamb Puppy formula to Bo. There are several quality foods on the market, and also a lot of junk. It really depends on your pup's preferences and if he is a picky eater. Fortunately, Bo falls somewhere in the middle. Some days he gobbles it up, some days he won't eat his breakfast till 11:00. I feed twice a day. But he's 4 1/2 months old. With a pup who is picky and tiny, you may want to keep a closer watch. It's very important, as several have said, that you switch foods gradually. Good luck and welcome to Yorkietalk!! And I love the name Riley!! :aimeeyork |
I just go Romeo recently and he was on a puppy food I had never even heard of so what I did was take his old puppy food and mix it in with the new type, (like I use Eukenuba Puppy Food) so its easier on his stomach. Also, while he is a pup, I was told to give him his nutri-stat 3 times a day and wet down his pupppy food 2 times a day and always leave down dry food. He eats both really well. Hope this helps!! Let us know! |
