Potty training such a fail.. HELP!
 

if he is still small enough you could try putting the potty pad in the tub. thats how i trained cedric. i would sit with him in the bathroom until he'd pee and or poop. no treats just a lot of excitement and praise for being a very good potty boy. that worked for me. keylo took to the pads immediately so i was lucky with her. wishing you the best....remember patience, consistency and catching them in the act with firm but positive reinforcement.

We will be trying that ... Maybe that works ? I'm just thankful we have tile throughout the whole house .. I'd be in trouble if I didn't haha !

How often are you taking him out? Have you tried crate training? Also, have you tried containing him to a smaller area using something like a xpen with the pad inside? Once he starts to understand that he needs to use the pad, slowly increase his space.

Some pups can be bit more stubborn than others. 4 months is still really young too don't be discouraged. I'm sure many memebers here (including myself) had gone through similar/same situation so we understand your frustration. Just have lots of patients and it'll all work out!

I'm having the same problems. We did good at first, but since it is getting colder Gunner doesn't want to go outside at all. I came home from bowling tonight and my husband put several pee pads all over, so I guess he kinda gave up tonight.

So Gunner does potty on the pad though and not any/everywhere else? I think the OP is saying Toby doesn't potty outside and when inside doesn't potty on the pad either.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Funny you mention weather... It rained here today so I thought it'd be a good opportunity to try out the new raincoats I got them. Well, mostly Magnus. When I opened the garage door and he realized it was raining, he went back to the door, scratching to be let in. :rolleyes: I guess his highness didn't want to get his paws wet. LOL

I used the crate. But the key is, whatever method you choose, you need to be consistent and strict. The first weeks have been very hard because he was allowed to leave the crate only to go outside and potty. We praised him when he potty outside and say things like "good boy, potty outside" and scold him with a big NO when he had an accident in the house. He is 4 month now, I stll dont trust him 100% and still supervise him .....but he is doing good and goes at the door when he needs to go potty. I found on you tube many video on potty training methods. Good luck

The thing that really turned potty training around for me was teaching Cookie to go pee/poop on command. Until then it was really frustrating, as she'd get sidetracked by literally anything when I'd take her out to pee/poop, and thus we got tons of indoor accidents. So the way I started it was I took her outside and just took her to her favorite pee spots over and over again. When she finally squatted down I told her "Go Pee" as she was urinating. I continued this any time she was urinating or defecating, giving the "Go Pee" command as she did it. Cookie caught on pretty well, and soon the "Go Pee" command would get her to start sniffing around for a favorite area, followed by a squat and pee/poop. Critical to this is also giving enormous praise right after your pup does the pee/poop successfully where you want. You really want it to feel good for him to go where you want him to, so treat your yorkie like he just cured cancer when he goes in the right place.

And what a cute boy Toby is! Get ready; potty training is hard work at that age.

Great information! I will need to try this! Chevy doesn't even give the pee pad a second glance, he'd rather go outside. There are some days I don't want to go out earlllyyy in the morning alone and if it's chilly he will just sit there shaking with chills while looking at me with a look like "mommy please let's go back in". But when he wakes up he goes straight to the front door like that's where he wants to do his business.

I also puppy pad trained my yorkie. I also crate trained him. And now he pees on command. He is 7 months old and never has an accident. I am in the middle of training my 9 week old pomchi puppy on puppy pads/crate as well. He has had only 1 pee accident and that was the first day we got him. And he's had 4 poo accidents. But he is already running to the puppy pad to pee and poop on it. And he's starting to go on command. I've only had him for 2 weeks. Here is what I do. I did this same thing for my yorkie.

1.Crate train.Make his space big enough for him to turn around and lay down. If you cannot watch him, put him in his crate. (Even to get a glass of water or go to the bathroom!)

2.Keep him on a food schedule. I feed my pomchi 3 times a day. Morning, noon and 3 hours before bed time. They do need water though at all times during the day. Take the water away 1 hour before bedtime.

3.Keep him on a potty schedule. To do this I have a small notebook that I write down the exact time he goes pee/poo. This will give you the amount of time that he needs inbetween times he pees and how often he poos. My puppy goes pee around every hour to every hour and a half. But I like to take him every hour just in case. And I found out that he poops 2 times in the morning and once at night. Your pup will be different.

4.Training in general. Ok, here's what I do during the day and at night. Since day 1, I sat on the ground with my pup when he was out. I kept him in 1 room ONLY. Don't let him roam. Ever. He was always in arms reach for me to grab and put him on his pad. Keep him playing with you near his pads. Also, I put food and water near (not right next to) his pads so he is always close to everything he needs. Toys, toys, toys. They will always play with you when you're playing with toys. If he tries to run away, go get him and bring him back. My pup was wanting to run away and poop out of sight. That's a big sign that they need to poo. So, if he runs away suddenly, you go after him and immediately put him on the pad. Whether he has to potty or not. And say "go potty". If no poo, keep him close. Sniffing the ground. If you see this, automatically grab him and put on the pad and again say "go potty". If no pee, again, keep him close. ANY time my pup wasn't playing with toys or with me and he started sniffing, it was right to the pad. So, when he does go pee/poo you continuously say "go potty!". The whole time he is going don't stop saying it. When he finishes, you pet him like crazy and say "good potty!". Then he gets a small treat. Remember, write down the times. When he gets tired, put him in his crate. AS SOON as he gets up from nap, it's to the potty. I didn't allow him off the pad until he went. Because they ALWAYS go after nap. Now at night. For my pup, he can hold it for 2 and a half hours. So the rule is 1 hour for every month they are. (1 month, 1 hour/ 2 months, 2 hours). So if you start out taking a 7/8 week old puppy potty every 2 and a half hours and he has already peed, cut it down to every 2 hours. And so on. You HAVE to take them potty at night when they are puppies. Period. When they are older, they will be able to hold it at night. My 7 month old yorkie can hold it all night. But that's still no more than 8 hours. Also, take them potty right before bed time that way you know they already went when you go to bed. And remember, if you see them start to potty on the floor, just say "ah,ah,ah!" and take them straight to the potty pad and say "go potty". Never spank or rub their nose in it. And if you see they have made an accident on the floor and you didn't catch it, just clean it with a good enzyme cleaner (I use Natures Miracle) and forget about it. They are babies. Accidents happen. I know this seems like a lot of work, and it is. But a little more work in the beginning with your puppy and you will have a problem free dog. I'm sorry, I didn't see this. No, he peed where ever he wanted. My husband thought he would pee on the pads, but he wasn't watching him close enough to make him go on the pads when he went. Now the weather is nicer I am doing better with him. But, when it is only the husband all my work goes out the window, or on the carpet! LOL
