I saw that somewhere for training, have a reward toy for this trick and a reward toy for that trick. My boys have a massive pile of toys and they actually root through and find the one they feel like playing with. Now if I could just teach them to put them away |
This is personal preference and has nothing to do with training or obedience, I don't like the look of a messy toy box, or the clutter of too many toys. Kaji has one small basket. What fits inside he keeps, what doesn't has to go. Broken toys get replaced, and the only designation we currently have is his regular toy basket, and 3 squeaky tennis balls that are designated for outside use. |
I've heard that it is better to limit the number of toys but I do not. Hannah is a toy freak and it is not unusual for her to have 3 in her mouth at the same time. She will find you when she wants you to play with her. As far as chewing or grabbing things that don't belong to her...she is guilty however, she seems to be getting better with age!! I always replaced with a toy or treats. In her case I think the teething process was a big part of her problem. She wanted something hard to chew on like wood. She has her favorite toy but when she gets bored she always pulls out a different one and gets super excited about it. I think it's all up to you and what you want and expect out of your pup. I just want Hannah to be Hannah...happy and spoiled. Most of her toys stay in her kennel until she brings them out on her own or if I ask her to go get them then she's more than happy to do so. |

Jasmin has tons of toys. She is a good girl. She doesn't touch things that don't belong to her. Also she has never chew on wires or other things around the house. |
Gizmo has 2 different sets of toys, which I rotate out about once a week so he never gets bored of them. It also gives me a chance to put the played with set through the washer and get them all nice and clean again :-) I put his toys in his xpen with him while he is in there, so he loves his xpen when it is time o slow down and rest. Once I open his xpen, he brings out about 3 or 4 toys to play with and leaves the rest in there. He seems to switch up what his favorites are each day :-) he has yet to et bored of any of them yet. The only issue right now, is he loves to get ahold of something he's not allowed to have, and lets me know right away by running away as fast as he can, then he plays keep away with me for his prize he has found. I eventually always win but he makes me work for it lol, I think he thinks its a really fun game :) he's only 4 months old, so I think he's doing really well. He will always bring me his favorite toy of the day or fetch and tug of war :-) I always know which one it will be by it being the first one he carries out of the xpen when I open it in the morning when he wakes up :-) when he goes back in his xpen for nap times, his toys go with him :-) |
I think dogs should have a variety of toys. All 3 of mine love to have a choice, soft and fuzzy, squeaky, chew toy, puzzle type toy...I generally pick toys up a few times a day, but I don't mind because I love seeing where they are and how they end up. We keep some toys in baskets in the living room, and the rest of them are upstairs in their room. I have learned that when bringing home new toys I need to get 3 of the exact same thing, not 3 different kinds. Puff is our only Yorkie and she is the only one that tries to hide all new toys and keep them for herself! |
I have actually never heard of this, but I can see a certain amount of 'logic' in 'the thought' of limiting toys, especially with a puppy in a house with young children/toddlers/babies where the dog needs to learn that 'not all toys in the floor' are toys he should chew on. However, I have never had an issue with that, and I, as a child, had a Yorkie-Poo mix from a very, very young puppy with a toddler sister. I was very careful training my puppy to leave alone my baby sister's toys, and he did. He, while I was at school, chose one of my favorite shoes, a leather 'pixie boot' (ankle height) for his teething toy and chewed it down to a 'silver dollar' sized piece of the heel. I gave him the other boot, but his teething days were over by that time. Brody is EXTREMELY toy centric. He has tons of toys and craves more and we have a hard time finding toys he does not already have. He knows them all 'by name' and is very neat and organized with them. He 'keeps' them in only two (2) places in the house, and he picks up his toys if they fall off, or another Yorkies carries one off...usually for the fun of tormenting poor Brody ;)...and puts them away again. I can tell you for certain, if Brody's toys HAD to be limited, Brody'd never survive it...he'd need to be put in a straight-jacket and COMMITTED...:sidesplt: |
Thats just nuts ! More the better ! Our bella will pick out a new one at our pet store when we go once every couple of weeks. And when she gets tierd of her tons of toys she grabs a sock or wash rag ! Lol |
Huey has a limited number of toys, but it is a large limit:rolleyes: He has about 15 or so "regular" toys, each of which has a name that he knows. In the evenings, I pick them all up and put them in his toy box, and he starts again the next day, removing them one at a time until over half are spread out in the bedroom and den. It is like he keeps pulling them out until he finds the one his human wants to play with. When no one will play with him any longer, he pulls out his toothbrush and chews on that for a while. He plays alone with several of his squeeky toys, throwing them in the air and chasing them. He has fluffy toys to shake and "kill" and one "special" raccoon that we won't mention...:D I don't know why there is a set of lips at the top of this. It was unintentional... |

I really don't know how people come up with these crazy ideas! The only way I limit Gracie's toys is in how many she is allowed to bring up the steps onto the bed. I take all but 2 off the bed and by the end of the week we have 6 or 7 up there again. She has her own toy basket that I throw her toys into and we have a race to see if I can finish vacuuming the floor before she can spread them out again. |
Maybe I'm just crazy, but I LOVE toy shopping! I would much rather spend the whole day shopping for toys and puppy clothes :) than shopping for something for myself.:( |
Number of toys can depend on age needs Our Yorkie has a little toy basket with a canvas lining. He has an assortment of over 10 toys inside. He has 2 favorites he takes out every day, and the others he takes out just for an enjoyable change. He started out with 2 toys as a puppy, but by age 3, he has a larger collection which have been tested & enjoyed. He had 2 toys out today that he had not used for @ a week. Then, after chewing or bringing these to me for a fetching game, I noticed he went back to hunt out his small yellow ball & his grey elephant..his Big Favorites that are used every day. I suppose a puppy would be overwhelmed by the 10-12 objects in Taff's box...if they were given all at once! But, Taffy has accumulated his toys over 3 years and has made a thorough play-study of every one in his basket. He really loves his choice of toys! Have fun! -- Sue & oTaffyoo |
Taffy's basket I picked up a doggie item basket w/ a canvas liner on sale at TJ Maxx 2 years ago. We keep it next to Taffy's open bed crate in the t.v. room. He has over 10 toys in it now. I went through it last month and took out the little gift-toys some folks gave him (a small stuffed shoe, tiny dog) which he had left in the bottom as he didn't like them any more). He will actually stand inside the 7" high basket to sort through his loot...drop a couple over the side and trot off with his choice. He always takes out one of nis little yellow fetching-balls and later his 12" floppy, nubby-material elephant every day. The others he gets out to "entice us" if we have already played, and he hopes to get even more reaction. Some toys he just drags under the rocking chair (his 'den'), chews on them & takes a nap. He probably started with 3 toys as a puppy, but his collection grew over 3 years. I can tell he knows the difference between his toys very easily. It's easy to flip the toys back inside the basket..he never takes out more than 3-5 per day, and he will carry some right back to the basket area now when he gets another toy out! |
