Eye infecton advice I don't know if it's an eye infection, but all of a sudden Charlie has something going on under his right eye. It looks like there was gunk there and it was tore off and left a raw spot. I will take a pic and post it in a little bit. I can't get him to the vet tonight because they are already closed but I am going to the store. Is there anything I can get to maybe clean his eye in the meantime? What signs should i look for to try to figure out what is wrong with his eye. I read impacted teeth or abscessed teeth cause eye problems too? any one who knows about this a little, please let me know. |
I would use some plain saline drops to flush/clean it, but the vet will most likely prescribe some antibiotic eye ointment in the morning. |
Poor Charlie! Check the white of his eye to make sure it is not red or bloodshot. As long as there is no sign of irritation like winking, holding his eye shut, or colored discharge, then he should be okay tonight. The sore could be a number of things, including a dental problem, or a simple bite or scratch. Definitely have the vet take a look. Hoping for both of you that it is something simple. |
For cleaning tonight, I would use a simple cotton ball wet down with warm water. I wouldn't put anything on it since it is so close to the eye. Wait for the vet to recommend something. |
It's on the skin, right? Not the eye? |

but he is pawing at it I meant to say. I'm doing this from my phone so excuse my typos. |
Zoey had an accute eye infection on her left eye once. But that was b/c she tears a lot and I realize I should be wiping/cleaning her eyes often. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary except her pawing at her left eye only. Some ointment cleared it up. Poor Charlie... I wonder if catching/searching for those mice had anything to do with? Maybe got slightly poked while trying to get to them? Hope it's nothing complicated. |

I wondered the same exact thing about the mice too. He gets a lot of gob too that builds up on his eyes. I try to get it as much as possible, but it's easier said than done. He doesn't really like it. I am going to take a pic of his eye right now. Give me a minute and i'll post it. Maybe someone can tell possibly what it looks like. |
Did he have eye goobers & when you cleaned it, was it red underneath? Is it in the corner of his eye? Or is it someplace else....the redness? Bc when the eye goober has been there for some time, it will irritate the skin underneath & when removed, it will be red. If the redness is not from eye goobers & it is under his eye, then it can be this: Fourth Upper Premolar Tooth or Carnassial Tooth Problems Here's the bigger pic: http://www.2ndchance.info/carnassialLgfile.htm |

Discharge building up is another sign something is going on with the eye. Take a good look under bright light to make sure nothing is in the eye, like hair. |

Does Charlie tear a lot? I can't really tell from his picture... What are you using to get the boogies out? I'm using the flea comb and then recently started wipe/cleaning off with nursery water (fluoride free nursery water or gerber baby water). Adding the baby water to the routine REALLY helped with the tear stains and boogies. It also seem to help with the slight odor she had on her face. I hardly notice it now when I sniff her face to check. LOL |

Wow thank you so much. It looks very similar to the picture of that yorkie. This is not a very good picture but here's what I could get The other ones made it look a lot worse than it actually does. |
Yes he gets eye goobers. I do my best to clean them as often as possible. I looks like it could go either way. irritated or infected. i'll take him in the morning to find out what it is. It like showed up out of no where. |

I think I may have pulled some hair out when cleaning under her eyes. I felt like that is what initially caused the raw areas. and they were staying moist from her tears. When I cleaned daily it seemed to irritate it, but if I didn't clean daily it made it worse. She took the oral antibiotics and I cleaned every other day instead of daily for a few days and it worked. Nala's under eyes looked like the picture you posted of Charlie. |
