Help!! I'm a newbie!! Thinking of getting a Yorkie!!! Advice needed! Hello All, I'm new to YT. I figured this would be a great place to start as I journey on my adventure of owning my very own Yorkie. I have always wanted a YT since I was a kid. I have went through all the pros and cons of having a pup, but one thing concerns me. My work schedule is of heavy concerns. I work a 12 hour shift at night, 3 nights a week. The nights I work vary. My concern is my pup will be alone for more than 12 hours during those nights that I work. What should I do??? I don't have a sitter or at least a dependable one. Will having a Yorkie be the right choice for me??? And advice would be helpful. |
Welcome! As long as you have everything lined up the pup is going to need, he will be fine. The first year of Peanut’s life he was alone about 12 hours more than a couple times a week. I worked 12 hour days and Hubby did as well. We would both come home when we could, sometimes we weren't able to. Peanut was left food, water, toys, etc and he always did fine. Anytime I was off, it was his time. Weekends were always spent with him too. Some people make it such a big ordeal, however just because you work doesn't mean you shouldn't have a puppy.. it can be done. Now a days you can even set up a little cam and hook it up to your smart phone and you can check on him through the cam!! Hubby bought me a security camera set for the house, inside and outside cameras.. it has the app so I can download and watch Peanut while I’m at work!! I can spy on the little bug, see what he really does all day!! LOL |
I work 12 hour nights and although hubby works during the day and is usually home at night, he does go out of town for the weekend every 4 -6 weeks to check on his aging mother in another state. Huey does fine left alone for those nights (but I'm sure if he could talk, he would tell you otherwise!) :rolleyes: Welcome to YT. You will find a ton of great info here. |
My .02: Can you take an hour lunch on your long days and walk your dog after 6 hours? If not, I would consider doggy daycare, a dog walker or a dog sitter on your 12-hour days. Not because the dog couldn't be trained to hold it, but because the dog needs some stimulation during the day. Think of a dog spending 12 hours alone, when it will mostly sleep while waiting for you. Then after a little stimulation, it will sleep for another 8 hours a day while you sleep. That's 20 hours of total inactivity a day, three days a week. You're begging for behavior problems because the dog is likely to get bored. Again, just my .02. Good luck. |

yorkies are the best dogs ever!! If you can afford get one (remember to include vet bill in your budget n good dog food go for it they are the best so cute and loyal. When I first got Bunny I couldnt even take to steps and she would be right there. |
I don't think it'll be a problem, especially at night. I would definitely get a play pen for her to be in a confined area with her food, water, bed, and safe toys. |
Do you plan on getting a puppy or an older yorkie? There is no way I'd leave a yorkie puppy alone for 12 hours, for at least the first 6 months of it's life. |

Agreed. An adult Yorkie can handle being left alone that long (though they won't like it!) But a puppy just can't be left alone that long for fear of hypoglycemic episodes, potty training, behavioral issues etc. I work 12 hour shifts, too. But my 12 hours turns out to be MUCH longer than that when you add in commutes, meetings, stopping or a few groceries on the way home... |
Thank You all for the advice... It is greatly appreciated. I will consider getting an older Yorkie or try and find a dog daycare for my work nights... |
With a puppy I would worry about hypoglycemic episodes when your gone and if no one is there to give nutrical it could end extremely badly. Also I think would make potty training VERY hard. Maybe you could rescue two adult yorkies that have been together that way when your not there they have each other. |

Thank you all for the advice..I definitely want to do what's best for any pet that I may obtain.. So I will have to wait patiently until the time is right.. With my work schedule I don't think it ever will. :( |
