Here's some more ideas of what could have happened: Unless this is a rare mutation of coat, coloring and even conformation, there's a practical explanation. If the breeder friend is truly trustworthy, wouldn't switch papers, things like that, and unless she's inbreeding, she undoubtedly uses outside lines and brings in other dogs/farms out her dogs to cross lines so doubtless the switch, if there was one, occurred in one of those dogs or its parent/recent ancestor. Or a small little dark and tan interloper got to one of her females unbeknownst to her during a potty/play/walk/boarding/vet/pet-setting session or the other dog came for a visit with a friend and their owners left it and one of her females alone together for a few minutes.

I agree she looks part chi. Also maybe it's possible that a chi might have mated with the mommy, without your grandmothers friend knowing. It's amazing what a male dog will do to get to a female in heat. I once owned 2 chows, a male and a female. When my female went into heat, I locked my male in the garage to keep him away from her while I was at work. My male chow named Rex, actually chewed a large enough hole through my garage door while I was at work, then also chewed a hole through my house back door and made it to daisy, getting her pregnant. I think even though the siblings looked like your pup, really doesn't matter as each pup can have a different father. I would also be very Leary of who is doing the DNA, results can be mixed p or even false. But no matter, as long as you all love the pup that's all that matters as long as it was just purchased as a pet xoxo :-) the pup is adorable regardless and looks very sweet and happy.

what makes this strange is like you say you have known the breeder for years, so she does not sound like someone that would be out to screw your family. You are new to Yorkie Talk so you have most likely not seen the hundreds of threads started by people that were screwed intentionally by breeders either with off standard dogs, mixed dogs, dogs that were younger than stated and so forth, it a shame but it is growing more common so that is why a bunch of us have questions or opinions about the breeder.

Odd but I guess it will not be something we can figure out, I am just glad she has become part of your family. I am curious though since you have two yorkies what did you think when you first saw the pup, did she look like a yorkie pup to you? Also since it seems like this is not the breeders first time with litters what's her opinion of why this pup does not look much like a yorkie.

you said her dad was a wire haired yorkie, that is not a term I hear when talking about a purebred yorkie, do you have pictures of the parents, that might help explain things

I always thought it was strange that she never looked as much like the other ones and I did tell my grandmother my concerns, but it is the one that my grandmother loved from the beginning and all she was wanting was a great companion not one to breed or anything so I let her choose the one she wanted. I do trust the lady, however so I am really just unsure as to what the deal is. Of course both of my babies were complete fur balls from the beginning so I did think it was odd and it is still strange that she looks like she does and all the others look like normal yorkies. Regardless she is a sweetheart, but it is still one big mystery. And as far as DNA test go, I had them all done through the two vets office in my town. i checked for purebred, which came up positive, and I checked one for any crossbreeds just to see if maybe something came up and that one came back with no results

pup does not look like dad, from what I can see the dad has pretty coloring and very shinny hair. He has floppy ears but tons of yorkies do not have ears that stand straight up. Dad does look like a yorkie though. I am just glad that you grandmother is not upset and loves the pup. BTW what is the pups name, LOL I think in all this time discussing her you have not said.

Her name is Lucy Kate! And yes she does love her. The mom looks a lot like the dad, except she is more silver and tan.

Correct me if I'm wrong...because I'm just going off of theory...and I don't know much about breeding and how genetics work in dogs. But this situation reminds me of genetics from ancestors showing up in later descendants. For example great great great great British grandmother's blue eyes showing up in great great great great black grandson....skipping generations but then showing up randomly. Is that impossible in the dog world? Knowing that the Yorkshire Terrier is a result of many ancient breeds mixed together, is it not possible for some pups to come out with certain traits from ancestors?.....red legs, facial structure, no/ little hair?

It just is odd that the test would be flawed twice. Not saying it is not possible, just odd. And I forgot to mention she doesnt shed at all like I know most chihuahuas do and others do.

I have read and heard from people that they are not 100%. Maybe it picked up on some yorkie in the dog and went on that not sure but that looks nothing like a yorkie and I would think if it where just a short haired yorkie it would still have all the other features and look like just a yorkie with short hair.

So... I don't know how comparable this is but it just popped in my head. Freshmen in college, I met bunch of new friends. Mostly Koreans. But there was this one girl that was non Korean, Anna. My best guess was that she was Hispanic. One night, we were all at a friend's room. I started saying something in Korean b/c I couldn't find the correct translation. Then Anna replied in Korean. She spoke Korean fluently. I was totally shocked and I asked when she learned. Apparently, she was full Korean. We all thought she was joking so she ended up getting her family picture from her room to show us. I ended up carefully asking if she was adopted. She just laughed and said no. And she understands our reaction b/c she gets it all the time.

Obviously, we weren't going to ask for DNA proof. LOL But unless her parents did adopt her and have been lying to her, as far as I believe, she is indeed full Korean. But seriously, there was NO asian in her as far as looks were concerned. You would have NEVER guessed she was asian.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Back when I was in high school I had this male friend whose facial features SCREAMED Native indian. Now He already told us he was Dominican, and I already knew that Dominicans are made up of 3 race's... (Spanish, Taino Indians, and african) so I already knew what was in his ancestry....But He looked like a FULL BLOODED Taino. I'm talking about the red copper-tone skin, high cheek bones, the facial structure....the thick jet black hair, the nose. EVERYTHING!:eek:

Now from what I understand back when the slaves were first brought over to D.R., A lot of Taino's died off from the foreign diseases, left to go live in south america, and some stayed and had children with the Spaniards or Africans. And there are little to no Full blooded tainos left in DR. I mean, I've never gotten to see what his parents looked like or find out who was the closet taino ancestor, but they clearly had strong genes.

Sometimes I used to stare at his face in awe because I've never seen Taino features in real life. Also my family is from the Caribbean, and we had Arawak indians, and just like in DR they either died, left, or mingled. My father's Grandmother was half Black, half Arawak and her name was Inta. So he was my blast from the past so to say. :D LOL.

Probably not that odd if their techniques and protocols, controls and perhaps their lab techs are the same as the first test. Read that thread about DNA testing through about what DNA samples labs use for reference or controls and you can readily see how unreliable some tests can be.

If I could see the dog's DNA test results, I might be able to draw some conclusions. She sure does look a lot like Minnie, though. It almost makes me wonder whether there is a rare mutation in Yorkies that hasn't been characterized yet.

I also forgot to mention that her hair is very very thick on her body. It is just very short so it looks like there is not much hair at all.

That doesn't even look like a Yorkie? Could it just be picking up on the fact that there is a small amount of Yorkie in the dog?

If I'm not mistaken, yorkies don't have really thick hair. I know gizmos hair is not very thick at all. Maybe someone else knows more about this, it I'm pretty sure it should not be very very thick.

I mean thick as in like its not thin like chihuahuas hair usually are. It is thicker and ore full. I know when my yorkie I have was a puppy she had thick hair.

None of my Yorkies had thick hair. Scotty's and Jilly's coats were very fine, silky but not what you would call thick. Tibbe's is fairly cottony but I couldn't call it thick at all.

You'd think if this were a mutation, it would just be a mutation of coat and not other features as well. I think this pup is the result more likely of a Yorkie-mix or other breed involved in the pedigree somewhere along the way and a lab testing process such as was described in the DNA thread. That white under the muzzle, throat and chest is like a lot of Chihuahua's markings and they have been introduced into Yorkie breeding in the past to try to bring about a certain look or merely by accident without the breeder knowing or telling and then there's just the look of the dog - it doesn't look like a Yorkie does with its hair cut back.

I was not meaning thick as in like fur. My yorkie Ellie has very sof silky hair but she has a lot of it and Lilly Anne has coarser hair, but not as much hair as Ellie does, I was just meaning Lucy does have hair although it does not look like it as much. And I guess there is no telling what it could be. She is loved regardless though.

If someone asks what breed of dog she is, tell them "dog?... Lucy's a cat..." :D

People try to guess what Magnus is all the time b/c of his size and other features. I've gotten tired of explaning so I just say "I don't know.. he one of those mysterious types so he won't tell me..." And we all have a good laugh and on to another topic. I haven't done any dna test on him but maybe I will some day just to see. But like and your grandmother, my family and I love him to pieces! :)

Yeah, I knew what you meant. Short-haired dogs hair does feel thick when you run your hand through it, doesn't it? Does little Lucy shed at all - do you see short little hairs around where she lays on the couch or on clothing?
