Feeding How small should the puppies portion be for each meal this morning I feed him 1/4 is that too much or too little ? & I will feed him 4 times a day on a schedule the breeder use to free feed her puppies but I'm going to have a set schedule since I'm home most of the time until he gets older maybe ill think about free feeding he's only 2 1/2 months @ 3 lbs I believe vet check up on Monday though so ill know for sure |
Congratulations on you new puppy. Quantity depends on which food you feed and how many calories per cup are in the food. 1/4 cup x 4 times a day is okay for foods like Purina, which is what Teddy ate when he was a pup. Max had a higher calorie food, so when he was about 3 pounds, he ate 1/4 cup only 3 times a day. If you are feeding treats, take those into account too for total daily intake. Free feeding is more for puppies and some adults who need it, and who are good self regulators. We always used scheduled feedings. |
Thank you thank you :) very now he is on puppy wellness as his food mix with extreme tiny pieces of boiled chicken right now . The breeder said it was healthy for them but I'm gonna which off from the chicken gradually . Breeder is actually a vet how funny is that lol |
Since he is very young and you are not free feeding then you really need to feed him 4 times a day for now. As he gets older you can cut out one feeding. Small breed puppies need to eat more frequently since they cannot eat as much at one setting as a larger pup would. The brand you are feeding should give you some guidelines on feeding by weight. You can use some judgement on increasing or decreasing the amount you give him according to energy and activity levels. |

I agree, check out the bag for feeding guidelines, and feed a little less. I think food companies overestimate. Wellness, I think would be closer to 3/4 cup a day for a 3 pound puppy, especially if you are adding a little chicken. Plain chicken is fine to add as long as it doesn't exceed about 10% of your pup's daily intake. This is so you don't upset the balance of nutrients that your pup is getting. |
