Whats the story on ears When Cassie was about 3 months old and we had been to the vet. I asked him if the hair in the ears had to be pulled out of a Yorkie. He told me that Yorkie s are not the same as poodles and he would not pull out the hair unless there was a problem. After reading some of the posts and hearing that some of you do it and also was worried about these ear mites. Never heard of them!! Is this what happens if you do not pull hair out :embarasse |

For all my three dogs, we would pluck the hairs in their ears. All of them are fine with that. I think you should pluck the hairs in the ears to avoid the ear mites and god knows what would go into their ears! :eek: It is important to keep their ears clean n dry. Thatz just my 5 cent opinion. Yikes! 1 Attachment(s) Plucking doesn't hurt them? It sure the heck hurts me when I pluck the hair out of my ears!! LOL Kidding! But I used to have an Epilady Shaver for my legs that plucked the hair out. Now that REALLY hurt. I don't use that anymore. Any of you remember the Epilady? I know I'm off topic, but sometimes I have to find ways to amuse myself. :D |
The little Yorkie and some other breeds do have quite a bit of hair growing inside their ears. It is my understanding that these hairs should be removed because they can collect dirt, dust, etc., which can lead to infections, etc. So - it's done to help their ears stay clean. Carol Jean |
Some dogs have more hair in their ears than others.... I think if there's only a hair or two you can probably leave it alone. My pup had quite a bit, I ended up pulling it myself. She didn't even flinch. |
We took our yorkie "teddy" to the groomers to get his ear and nails trimmed. The groomers as well as the vet we always take Teddy to said it's perfectly fine and safe to get the inner hair pulled. In fact, our vet suggested we get his inner hair pulled when he was examining Teddy's ear becuase it was getting too long. It's good to have them pulled to help prevent any infections. The groomer would put some liquid solution into the ear before she would pull the hairs off. This helps with any pain from the pull. I think it also makes the hair come out easier and faster. Before anybody yells at me....I know that this is against everything that vets tell you to do...but it works for me...so I'm going to keep doing it. I have never pulled out Syd's ear hair or had it done. I do, however, wash her ears out very well once a week when I give her a bath. I make sure to towel dry them out very well when we are done. She has never had a problem and I visually check them each week during the bath as well. I've tried to clean them with alcohol...but Syd can't stand the smell, and I don't want to pull the hair because, unlike my poodle, it isn't fine hair growing out of there...it is real fur. I've heard that you have to worry less about ear infections if you have a dog with ears that stand up like ours. More air circulates through there and keeps them dry and infection free. So if you aren't having a problem, and you don't want to pull ear hair, then I wouldn't. |
The hair growig in a Yorkies ears is indeed HAIR. There are drying powders that are put in and the hair is plucked a bit at a time. Most people use a small surgical clamp., take hold of a few hairs, twist a wee bit and pull..Keep doing that til all of the hair is out. Then it is easier to keep them hairless... |
Chloe got HORRIBLE ear infections when she was a smaller puppy. They were just awful and she would cry and scratch furiously at her ears. When I went to the vet he told me that her ear hair was supposed to be plucked out because otherwise it holds in moisture which can cause ear infections. We treated the ear infections with antibotics and they plucked her ears. Ever since then I try to pluck her ears but I havent had to do it as much, but I still do it about once every 2 months. I think it all depends on wether your dog is prone to ear infections or not. I would recommend doing it though becuase ear infections are just so horrible. |
