How to keep Gizmo from jumping through my stairs? So, I've had gizmo now for I think about 7 weeks, and he's listened to the word no really well. I also have three cats that have been his mentors unfortunately :-( until today I have been able to keep him from going up the stairs by a simple command of no. Gizmo also loves my husband, and this week my hubby has been working nights. When Gizmo hears his hubbies shower start in around noon he gets so excited, because he knows the hubby if awake. Well today he finally decided to rebel lol. He heard that shower and went flying up the stairs before I could stop him. The other problem is, when my cats come down stairs, they take a short cut through the wrought iron railing about halfway down and jump. Gizmo loves the cats so much and follows them everywhere. He's only just over 3lbs right now, so I'm scared to death of him taking a death defying leap right along with the kitties. He's fast, super fast in fact lol. So I'm wondering if anyone here has figured out a way to block off an open staircase that has wrought iron railing? The problem is, he can fit under the bottom of the railing, so whatever it is would have to fit into each riser to completely block it. I tried googling a solution but came up with nothing :-( I also put a call into my local contractor I know to see if maybe he can custom cut plexi glass to fit into each riser of the stairs and go the full height of the railing, so it looks like we did it on purpose haha. Anyone else with this problem? Is so any ideas would help, as it just scares me to death to think of him going through the railing right behind the cats. Also a baby gate will not work, as he has already figured out how to walk on the stairs on the outside of the railing as well, on the little 4" ledge that is outside of the railing. So hr would just try walking the outside, till he gets past the gate, then go through to the stairs once he bypasses the gate. I'm afraid little Gizmo has finally outsmarted me LOL. It's unbelievable how smart he is. Thank you in advance for anyone who has dealt with a similar situation or has any ideas. I really need to do something fast haha. |
Can you post a picture of what your stairs look like? |
The thought of Gizmo balancing on the outside of the railing absolutely makes my knees weak. We have a split level foyer & Huey likes to look through the rails but it would be a 15 foot drop if he fell & we had to block off that area until we trained him to not do that. A cheaper although not as asthetically pleasing temporary solution could be some plastic netting between the stair rails. Garden Netting from Industrial Netting Is there a chance that he will get big enough to not fit between the rails? The cats will have to find an alternate route, though. |
That's a scary situation. I keep my steps completely blocked because Lola fell down 2 of them before. When my dog became senile we wove carpet through the rails on the outside deck, it was ugly but it was a good temporary solution. Like 10 years before that our blind, senile yorkie walked through the rails and fell into the recycleing bin. He was fine but we were freaking out for like 10 minutes trying to find him. |
Yikes! No ideas, but I hope you can come up with a solution. My Cherry just learned how to clime stairs yesterday but ours work very well with a baby gate, so we just blocked them. |
It is scary and think the netting might be a good solution. I did have a friend who's pet fell through the step rails, just as you are worried could happen. It was horrible and so very sad. |
1 Attachment(s) My yorkies have never tried to climb our staircase. They just walk around it. However, they are not in my living room without me. I had a chihuahua fall through them. He survived! |
my girlfriend purchased this and it is reasonably priced. She painted hers black, but I wonder if you could find this in black....anyway, here is the link. Safety 1st Safety Rail Net - Free Shipping |

That would be horrible if he decided to take that leap off the stairs. Maybe you could find some nice coordinating fabric and have some panels made to weave in and out of the rails and tied off somehow. You wouldn't even have to sew them, measure your stairs, buy the fabric by the yard, fold it to the proper height and just iron it folding under the rough edges. You could use safety pins to attach it. Maybe even a vinyl would work, its sturdy and comes in a verity of colors. No sewing or ironing with that. Just cut it to length & proper height and attach, maybe with some grommets. |
I started looking at fish netting yesterday, I am thinking I can staple it down to each riser. I live at the beach so it would go with the decor.:-) Here is what it looks like Woven Nets - Bulk Woven Netting | West Coast Netting |

The safety netting lynzy posted looked like a good idea. I would be very careful about putting up anything that he could get his little nails into. He could get caught and break something or climb up the netting. You could try gating him out of the room the stairs are in but it looks like you may have a lot of open area there. Those stairs are a true danger to a puppy. I hope you can find a safe way to keep him away from them. |
