Adding yorkie to a pack. Hi guys. So I've never been on the forum before but I'm looking for some advise from owners. I've asked some breeders and friends and family what they think and it seems there is no right or wrong answer, just opinion. I've always wanted a yorkie. I currently own a miniature english bull terrier. He's 2 yrs old, neutered, very polite and even tempered and gets along with all dogs, even my mothers maltese and many other little ones from our neighbourhood. We would like to add a second dog to our family and I would love it to be a yorkie but I'm not sure if that's an appropriate choice. My mini BT is 30lbs. He's quite muscular, very low to the ground (short legs) and very athletic. Basically what I'm not sure of is whether its a good idea to have a toy breed with a larger dog. And also, how do yorkies generally do with larger dogs? Are they usually timid towards dogs that are bigger? Mostly I see people with small dogs usually stuck to small dogs and larger breeds same thing. So what is the overall opinion or general consensus on adding a yorkie to a family with a bull terrier? Hi, welcome to Yorkie Talk! I have Dallas & Rory (both Yorkies). Dallas is the type that wants to run outside with the big dogs (we have Krypto, a red/blue heeler mix and Brodie, a lovable mutt). They have never hurt him, and outside is his favorite place to be. Dallas is almost 10 lbs, Krypto is probably about 40 lbs and Brodie is about 50 lbs. I have never owned an english bull terrier, though. I hope this is still of some help to you! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. There are many members on Yorkie Talk who have larger dogs and Yorkies, and seem to do fine. I have 4 little ones (around 7 lbs.) and they get along just great with my daughter's 100 lb. Rhodesian Ridgeback. Of course you have to monitor closely, especially in the beginning to protect the little one, but they can definitely learn to love each other. I don't know anything about Bull Terriers but 30lbs. doesn't sound too large. His interaction with your mom's Maltese is a good indication. If you are concerned, you might look for a Yorkie that is projected to be a little larger (like 7+ lbs) rather than on the smaller side (4 - lbs). Good luck. |
I think it is possible, I just would not get a tiny yorkie. A 3-4 pound yorkie could really get hurt if your pup stepped on them, but a 10-15 lber would be able to hold their own without you worrying about getting hurt. |
I know a lot of people that have yorkies and bigger dogs. It sounds like your boy has a nice personality. Yorkies come with all different kinds of personalities so you need to do some research to find out what kind of personality would best suit your household. I would also recommend a female because some males don't get along that well with other males. I think a little larger female would probably be best. Here is a picture of Lucy, my daughters female yorkie, with her buddies. They get along great and Lucy rules the house. The other dogs are Bud, a lab mix, and Daisy, a boxer/American bulldog mix. Lucy is a very very active yorkie and she hardly ever sits still. Missing in the picture is my daughters other dog, Fred, who is a 2 1/2 lb chihuahua. |

I have 3 yorkies 5lb,8lb,20lb, (yes a teapot yorkie gino) lol and a large German shep 50lb at 10mnths old,, I have to watch the 2 small ones more wen gsd gets excited as I don't want any accidents,, but my gino the larger yorkie gives gsd a fair play lol ,, they all get on well tho, so get a larger yorkie not a tiny .:) |

Hello Becca. I have Yorkies & Skye Terriers My Skyes are all around the 38lb mark & typical of the breed, long & low, muscular, dour & with far more terrier temperament. They all get along really well, in fact it's my littlest Yorkie girl, all 5lbs of her who is definitely in charge of the lot of them! |
