Deadly virus killing dogs in Michigan! This is scary....they think the dogs get this virus from humans......... Deadly dog virus strikes Ann Arbor, quickly kills six; Vets say it may spread from owners to pets There is a video on the site. Copied from the above link: ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - A deadly dog virus has struck Ann Arbor already quickly killing six. Veterinarians say it may spread from owners to their pets. Eleven-year-old Brutus started to show symptoms of the unusual virus Tuesday. “He would try to bark, and he would cry every time,” said owner Aarika Pederson. The Tecumseh woman did not get alarmed until Wednesday when Brutus didn't want to eat and barely moved. “I was trying not to lose it,” said Pederson. Veterinarians don't know exactly what kind of virus Brutus has, because there is no name for it yet. This is the first time the virus has been seen in metro Detroit and it's quickly killing dogs. “Usually within about 12 to 24 hours of it starting,” said Dr. Lindsay Ruland of the Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Ann Arbor. Dr. Ruland said Brutus and other dogs with the unknown virus are showing flu like symptoms. “Severe abdominal pain, often times bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy,” she continued. The virus is similar Circovirus that started getting dogs sick last year in San Diego and parts of Ohio. How the disease is transmitted is unknown. But canines with the virus appear to also have owners who are sick. “Traditionally we don’t pass viruses to our pets. This year, I think that there is potential that we are passing it to our pets,” said Dr. Ruland. Sure enough, Pederson said she has not been feeling well since Sunday. “I’ve had this stomach pain that just comes, that’s right beneath my ribs,” she said. Luckily, Pederson brought Brutus in early enough that the virus was caught in time. “I can’t imagine being without him right now." So far, no humans have died from the virus nor do doctors believe humans will get severely ill. To prevent the spread of germs and viruses, doctors recommend washing your hands and using hand sanitizer frequently. It is not known if the virus can spread to other pets. So far, the virus has only been seen in dogs. |
wow how scary |

this is very scary |
ZoE's vet posted about this today on his FB page after he contacted the MVMA (Michigan Veterinary Medical Association) this morning . This virus seems to take the dogs down so quickly. I'm so glad to see he's aware of what's going on and actively looking into it. Scary stuff! |
Ugh this is one of my worst nightmares. I get sick a lot, especially with respitory and GI stuff, and the idea that I could kill my dog with it makes me sick. It's also really making me rethink taking Lila out as much, for fear of her catching it from a person or dog. |
This is so unsettling... Thank you for posting this as things like this can spread so fast. I'm in VA but you just never know. I'll be washing my hands before I touch my two and instruct my family to do it as well. Also, if you live in my area, a bat infected with rabies was found. So Fairfax County is reminding all the residents to make sure their pet(s) have their vaccines and to pay attention to your surroundings for any strays, wild animals. |
Thank you for posting this Lady Jane. We live in Michigan but I'm sure it could quickly spread throughout the country if humans are the carriers. I will most certainly keep an even closer eye out of any unusual behavior in Sophie. Hopefully after seeing this post people will react quickly to any changes in their dogs appearance and actions and get them to their vet asap. Prayers go out for all dogs already infected. :animal-pa |
I just saw this on Facebook and was coming to post it. This is super scary as it is passed on from us to them. The key to survival, it seems, is get to the Vet ASAP. Waiting 12 to 24 hours is a death sentence. |
I thought this information so important I turned the story over to WZZM-13 News, our local ABC affiliate. They have the ability to get the word out to many thousands of people quickly. |
Yeah, I just posted it on one of our vet's fb and I'm going to post on local news FB, too |
ZoE's vet updated us again today. He wrote: "At this time, there is not a specific cause for the severe illness found in dogs in the Ann Arbor area. Several cases have been reported in California and Ohio. A relatively new virus, canine circovirus may be involved in these cases, but it has not been proven to be the cause. It could be caused by co-infection with this virus along with other pathogens that causes GI infection. It is NOT transmitted from humans or TO humans. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health at Michigan State University are currently working to identify what the cause of this illness is. If your dog should develop signs of vomiting, diarrhea (possibly bloody), passing fresh blood from the rectum, weight loss and listlessness, seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Limit your dog's contact with places that other dogs go- that will minimize your dog's risk of exposure to disease. There is no need to be unusually alarmed at this time." Dr. Childs |
Hmmm, I wonder why the news reports said it was passed from humans. Such a scary thing because I think there are so many unknowns right now. |
THANK YOU. for sharing this. Iam in mich, I sure will be praying they figure out whats causing this, very scary , My prayers go out to those who have lost there babies :( |
So good to know about this just in case Tibbe should start to have symptoms like this, we\'ll know to consider this virus as one of the causes. Thanks for the post. |
