question for you all Hi there I will be getting my new puppy this weekend! I'm so excited. I was wondering if any one of you have a mastiff or any other large breed dog also in your homes? I have had my mastiff for 7 years and he is the most lovable gentle giant :) . My other yorkie jimmy passed away 6 months ago and they were the best of friends. some people though at my job are telling me things like aren't you worried your new puppy will get hurt by the mastiff? and no i'm not worried about it at all. just wondering how well your doggies all get along if you have large breed dogs also? |
I have a Chocolate Lab. They get along great! Bella even sticks her head right in Myla's mouth when they are playing. |
that is so cute!! yes i'm not worried at all. I will keep the new baby away from him for the first couple weeks. and not leave them alone together they will be supervise for awhile, my mastiff would never hurt him intentionally. but will just not let my mastiff get excited during play time to acciddently swap him lol |
Joels big brother Rosco is 170 pounds(in my avatar) and they are BFFs. Rosco has never hurt him and lets Joel trample on him and climb on his head. I don't know how he takes it, but he does, lol |
My Tibbe loves big, powerful dogs but my Jilly hated them, wouldn't even go in the same room as one except to bark at it. She was very tiny and maybe that was what caused it. But Tibbe plays normally with the dog though my son and I sit beside them both when Tibbe is playing with Tex, my son's huge American Bulldog. One errant slap of a Tex paw could break Tibbe's back so we're VERY careful of them when they try to play. |
I think the major thing is the pup getting stepped on by him or trying to play and accidentally hurting him. You need to make sure that when no one is around they are separated so there are no accidents. |
I have two yorke mixes and two large dogs. I think it depends on the temperment and age of the large dog. Young large breeds while gentle can play too rough. My big dogs are 12 years old so the don't rough house much anymore. My lab was always good with little dogs. She used to crouch down low to try and play with them. |
thanks for your stories :) my big old boy is 8 so he don't play like he used to. they will always be supervised though.:) |
Our Diesel, an Old English Mastiff, weighs 225 lb and loves our little Biewers. Just introduce your puppy slowly so he is not frightened by your big dog. They will love each other. |
