Terrified Puppy Hello everyone! I'm having a few issues with my puppy.. My 18 week female yorkie, named Lola is always scared. I try to associate her with new things, such as going to parks to play, meeting new dogs, she's been to the groomers, she goes for car rides, lots of walks, etc.. So its not like she is living under a rock- I try to expose her to new things as much as I can! She just recently had a bad experience with going out side.. my neighbor had a leaf blower on and when I took her outside to go potty she freaked! She ran back as quick as possible, so I took her to a different area where it was not as loud and sure enough she went pee and poop and ran back as fast as she could. Ever since then she is scared to go outside. I have tried making going outside a pleasant experience for her by her doing her tricks out there and me rewarding her by praising her and giving her treats. (most of the time she doesn't want a treat because she is so scared...)I take her for little walks and she is just spooked by all the noises, and she always has been- the first time she heard a helicopter she freaked out as well, but ever since the leaf blower incident it has been worse. She pulls in the opposite direction (back to the door) when she hears any noises such as traffic, music, people talking...anything that isn't pure quiet! I must add she is at the point where she shakes when she hears unfamiliar noises.... I don't know what I can do to help her and make her feel more comfortable.. I feel so bad making her to go outside when she's scared but she is potty trained and I don't want to have any accidents in the house that are avoidable. I am open to any suggestions!:) |
I sure hope that someone can chime in and get this situation resolved for you.! Good Luck... |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am sorry you are having issues with you puppy. Yorkies have all different kinds of personalities and unfortunately some do get scared easily. How old was Lola when you got her? It will just take time and patience to get her over her fears. Are you normally home all day with her? Does she have free run of the house or is she crated at times? Are there any small children in the house? Has she been this way ever since you got her? Perhaps if you got some Rescue Remedy drops to give her prior to going outside. Also can you let us know what vaccinations she has had? Some vaccinations will make them more fearful for awhile. Hopefully with love and patience she will start coming around. |
Some are WAY more sensitive then others. Zoey's sort of like your Lola but not that extreme. How far are you taking her for potty? 18 weeks is still really young and she could grow out of it if you're persistent... How about inquiring a personal trainer? |
Thanks for the responses! I got Lola when she was about 7 weeks old so i've had her for awhile now. To answer some other questions that were asked.. There are two members in my household- my fiancé and I, so no kids. Between him and I someone is home with her majority of the time. Twice a week she is home alone for about six hours while we are both at work. Other than that one of us is home or in and out running errands through out the day, etc.. When we are gone she is in a crate and she is wonderfully crate trained I might add! I know of some dogs that are terrified and wont go in a crate for nothing! However, she likes hers! :) Lola has had all of her puppy shots, 4 boosts of her parvo/ distemper combination vaccination and she just recently got her rabies vaccination (after the fact). She has always been kind of scared of noises but never to this extent... So I am hoping that she will learn to adapt to different noises. For an example, she doesn't like to vacuum what-so-ever! (I'm sure this is common..) but I don't know whether to still vacuum when she's around or wait until when she's not around. I usually do it when she's not around. Same with the blow dryer, I go in a completely different room and shut the door so its not as loud to her. Ahh! I am so unsure of what I should do to help her.. |
Sorry- I need to correct my last post. I got Lola when she was 9 weeks! |
Have you tried putting a thunder shirt on her? They've been known to work wonders when animals are scared. It's very calming to them to have it on. It's not something you leave on all day, but a few hours. Good Luck. |
We recently bought a thundershirt for our German shepherd who is extremely afraid of thunderstorms, thunder, lightening and going out in the dark. The thundershirt has worked wonders for her. She doesn't shake when she is wearing it.. she will now go outside at night to do her business. She is such a great dog that would hold it all night rather than go out in the dark. And she is 12 years old now. So it does work great!!! :) |
