How do I prepare for neutering
 

Chili has an appointment to be neutered on Friday. What questions do I need to ask the vet beforehand? Are they supposed to do blood work in the days prior? What sort of anesthesia is safe (he is about 5.5lbs and 6.5 months old)? Which cone is most comfy and safe? If there is a thread with these answers already, can somebody please point me in the right direction? I looked in FAQ and yorkie Heath and didn't see anything. Thanks so much in advance for all of your help.

I have an appt for my baby next Monday. I'm really anxious about it. Maybe we can hold each other's hands since they're only a few days apart! lol

Definitely get blood work first. I would recommend not doing the surgery until you have the blood work.

I have 2 babies they are 11 months and just had them spayed and neutered. I did not have any previous blood work done. Wasn't necessary and one less poke of the needle was fine with me. Procedure went well my male was running around like nothing happened the following day. My female had a little more down time. Nothing to fret about as this is a very routine procedure. I did however go in with puppies for the entire procedure. Was glad to be able to hold them as they went to sleep and as they woke. Oh and my female is 2.8lb and my make is 3.2lb. Overall very smooth procedure hope it goes as well for your baby!

They will usually try to lick the incision. If you are home with him and able to watch him then you can leave the collar off, however if you have to leave or work it is best to have them keep it on. At night as well, Peanut wanted to sleep in bed with me after his surgery so I kept his off.. You never really know how they will handle the surgery after. Peanut took the surgery pretty hard- he didn't really eat, couldn't really sleep, didn't want to move around.. I had his surgery done on a Friday and I took a half day. I think it is best to be home with them, at least the next day. You can get a boneless skinless chicken breast and cook that the night before. I did this as Peanut didn't really eat those couple a days, I fed him the chicken and he did seem to enjoy that. You pretty much just have to watch them and nurse them… ( baby and spoil them) make sure they don’t run, jump, major activities. Keep them mellow for at least the first couple of days.

Also it is best to get him Micro chipped at the time of his neuter, if that is something you wanted to do. Make sure they have looked in his mouth to see if he has any retained puppy teeth that needs to be pulled out.. it’s pretty simple. Just take it easy next weekend, watch some movies, snuggle with your little baby.

It’s hard to say how Chili will handle the surgery. Just know we are here if you need any help!! This Friday I will be sending good thoughts for him, hope his surgery goes well and he has a quick recovery.

I am waiting until my boy is 1 before neutering, but when neutered my other boy, I put him a baby onsie instead of a cone. A lot more comfortable for him
