Pet Fountains Worth It.? I was wondering of actual benefis of pet water fountain. Is it legitimate.? Worth it.? What are favorite brands or series.? How often do I clean. Reason I ask is bc I was told monthly. To be honest I would probably forget n forget and only get the filter changed every 3 months. I was wondering do any work with that timeframe.? |
I have had four and until me moved I decided no more. I had to use a regular water dish for about two weeks when we moved and I found Callie drank more and was much happier with just the regular aluminium bowl. The fountains have to be cleaned weekly or they get slimy and most of them are VERY hard to clean even the ones that claim to be easy to clean are not. They have tiny pieces that snap here and there and it is such a pain. They also do splash some so you will have to keep a towel under it. |
I don't have one myself but I did consider buying one since Magnus prefers to drink fresh, cold water. I decided not to b/c it just didn't seem worth it. I just leave two bowls of water out and luckily there's someone home most of the day so their water bowls never goes dry. Is there any particular reason you're considering this? From what Lovetodream is saying, cleaning would be a pain. I'm glad I didn't buy one... |

we have one - it's ceramic - this one: Drinkwell Lotus Multi Level Pet Fountain - DMLT-CER Our cats and Pluto love it. They drink a ton of water from it. We clean it every week or two. It's easy to clean - a slight pain to put back together - but I'm convinced they actually drink more water with it than just a bowl. |
I have 2 fountains. My pups like this one better:  Amazon.com: Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain... But it's really a hassle to keep clean. So time consuming :( But they do love it...especially the little one. I bought this one thinking it would be easier to keep clean: Amazon.com: Pioneer Pet Raindrop Ceramic Drinking... It is ALOT easier to clean - no multiple parts. But compared to a water bowl, still a hassle. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I like fresh water & I like to have multiple water bowls around the house. The fountains are sitting in my kitchen pantry & I rinse and change out their water bowls about 3 times a day. Every couple of months, I pull a fountain out & set it up. After a few days, I remember why they're sitting in the pantry ;) |
Thanks. I even asked the store worker his honest opinion and he said. Its not really what the hype is about. Its probably equivalent to your fridge filtered water and cats are more picky towards it than we. As dogs hereditary is to drink standstill water more so than cats. My thought was it would provide health benefits. Although cleaning isn't my biggest worry. Going to the store purchasing and changing the filter monthly would be my biggest concern. I will also ask my vet what he thinks about giving them this as well about nursery water. He is also brutally honest. Which I lovee. My MAIN concern is hearing about crystals in the pups system. How shall I prevent that.?? I was truly planning using fridge filtered cold water with ice added in summers. Should this be fine.? |
I used to have one but it built up hard water stains that were difficult to remove, my dogs could care less but my cats liked it. The best way to prevent crystals is just give some wet food with their meals. My cat used to get crystals that turned into blockage about once a year. This was the only way I could guarantee he got enough fluid in his diet. |

1 Attachment(s) I use the water converter from Madan (in my site;):D). I buy the carton of Smartwater from Costco & screw it on, that's it. No mess to clean up, no spilled water. When the bottle is done, I just recycle it & screw on a new one. I always keep fresh water out for them in a stainless bowl, but Mimi prefers not to get her facial hair wet. The only down side to the water converters is that it needs to be attached to a crate, gate or ex-pen. You can also screw it onto a wall, here's a customer's pic: Attachment 392575 There's a quick release clasp, so the bottle is easy to replace or refill. Since the design of the converter is closed, no bacteria & the water stays clean. |
Well... we get deer park water so that's what I give them... Although, I do give them filtered water from the fridge from time to time. If it's good enough for me, it's good enough for my pups! |
