I'd say it depends on the dog. When I went to get my second dog, like you, I had heard that it's better to pair a female with a male. My older male is very dominant, he is fear aggressive and is insecure, so he comes with a boatload of baggage and I didn't think it would be easy to find the right fit. I ended up adopting a younger male, 2 years old...not a female. He is very submissive and is just a sweetheart. I think it's more about matching personalities than it is genders. If I would have adopted a dominant female, she may have butted heads with my dominant male. If I were adopting 2 dogs, I'd think about adopting litter mates. I've also seen a bunch of rescue's on petfinder where two dogs had lived together and need to be adopted together...I'd definitely consider a rescue like that as well since I know it's much harder to find a home that can take in 2 dogs at once. A lot of times, the pairs end up getting split up or it takes forever to find a home for both dogs, so to be able to give a furever home to a pair like that would be a really special, rare thing. |
