what are these bugs? Does anyone know what this little tiny ,thin,black or brown looking bug is thats crawling on my yorkshire terrier,its slender looking and either black or dark brown,theres not alot of them,just a few,but they crawl on his skin very fast to where i cant even grab them. I have tried flea treatment and bathed him but I have just found another one. He itches a little bit and I'm not sure what they are, I don't think they are fleas. I would appreciate any help Thanks |
They sound like fleas to me. I found one on Pixie twice this summer. I treated the house with flea spray, vacuumed everything and washed all bedding mine. I bathed them and waited 3 days and put on their Revolution. You need to get on top of fleas quickly. Good luck. |

Keep in mind, not all flea medications actually repel the fleas so it is possible they are still jumping onto your pup. Some work by interrupting the lifecycle so eggs don't hatch & others work by killing adult fleas on contact. Depending on what flea treatment you are using (ie not killing adult fleas but interrupting the reproduction cycle), you won't notice an immediate effect. It is important to vacuum and wash the bedding as well. |
fleas...Be careful, very careful what you do use to kill them, please use caution especially when panicked as I know fleas freak people out...I was one of them. |
dog Get a flea comb and gently comb through the fur. If you see black stuff that is flea poop. I would definitely comb out every day and good job using the revolution. That is what I use. |
When you say flea treatment, are you referring to the monthly treatments? And for the bath, what shampoo did you use? If just regular doggie shampoo, then it won't do anything to get rid of fleas. Perhaps other members can suggest a good flea treating shampoo. |
generally a bath will do it, the soapy bubbles kill the fleas. I'd recommend washing their beds, blankets and any cushions they sleep on, give the floors and furnishings a good hooover. Get some almond oil, add peppermint, citronella, lemon and clary sage oils and spray and rub a few drops of it into the dog after the bath and a dry. be sure to put a drop under it's tail, the buggers love that spot. Be relentless and check them regularly with a flea comb |
Regular (blue) dawn dish washing soap will kill the fleas when you use it as shampoo during a bath. But, like other have said, you have to get rid of the fleas that are in the environment, so they do not get on your dog again. I use comfortis flea treatment on my dogs and have no problems with fleas. |
Does it fly? I found a fruit fly on Maggie. I was able to pick it off her and see that it had wings and red eyes. It was a fruit fly. They are tiny. I have never seen a flea in real life so I can't help (yay!) We use K-9 advantix 2 and never a flea. She even rolls in the grass when she is playing with her boyfriend. She is probably being submissive, but we think she is just a loose woman. |
Fleas lay thousands of eggs in your home. You can get them off the dog but as the eggs hatch they will jump on the animal. If you use a spot on treatment make sure you use one like Advantage II or Frontline or one your vet recommends. Most of the brands in department stores are ineffective and can actually be deadly to your dog. It is best to vacuum you home very carefully. Make sure you do under your furniture and around the edges of your rooms, under cushions and clean all pet bedding in hot water. Using a good flea comb on the animals at lest once a day will tell you if your efforts have been successful. |
Thank you all so much for the replies. I took my little Baxter to the vets and it was definitely fleas - likely to have come from my cats which was a shock as they are all up to date with treatments but I guess they are out a lot so it can happen. I was given some treatment stronger than frontline as the vets said they have noticed some recent tolerance to frontline. So far so good, all bedding etc in the house washed at high temp and house sprayed. Thanks again :) |
Glad to hear things are okay. Fleas are notorious for being hard to get rid of completely. Keep up with checking both your pup and cats often for at least next few days. Also, using frontline, advantix, etc won't guarentee 100% that your pet won't get fleas/ticks. It's just always best to check manually. I hope you got a flea comb if you haven't already. :) |
Wow it just blows me away when someone doesn't know what a flea looks like. Seriously!! I'm beginning to think that most bugs live in Texas. Sorry to say but I've known about ticks, fleas and chiggers since I was a kid. I hate bugs!!!! Maybe I should think about moving. |
