Baby Mowgli 1 Attachment(s) So, I just got a yorkie! He's 7 weeks old and I am pretty new to the puppy game. Does anyone have any advice on how to care for a baby pup? Attachment 392344 |
CONGRATS on your new pupster!!! And, WELCOME to YT. |
Welcome to YT. 7 weeks is very young to be away from momma, and he may have issues with hypoglycemia. Read up under breeders section and just read through any threads about young puppies. Be sure and feed multiple times daily, watch for lethargy, altered mental status, unsteadiness, vomiting and make sure he eats ands drinks well after any play periods. Get him vetted immediately and a health check, makes sure shots are up to date and don't take him outside on the ground or to any public areas until his series of shots are all completed (12-14 weeks?) Baby yorkies don't have a lot of reserves, so if he gets sick, get him to a very immediately. Weigh him regularly and make sure he is progressing adequately. Also, post pics! We love pics!!! Welcome to YT and congrats on your new furbaby! What's his name? :D |
Awww! Welcome to YT :D For pups that age, I´d advise you to leave his food out 24/7 so he always has access to it, at least until he is about 3 months old ;) At that age, I´d also give mine a swipe of honey (you can get Nutrical so use that) on the roof on their mouth twice a day just to make sure their sugar levels didnt go down :D He´ll be fine, it´s much like having a baby :D Make sure he eats every few hours, even if you have to hand him to food yourself...oh, and don´t expect much of anything in the potty training department yet either lol. They pee ALOT at that age, and they don´t have control over their bladder yet either, so by the time he realises he needs to pee, he´s already half way through doing it lol ;) I´d start with the potty training at around 10+ weeks, because if you decide to crate train now, he WILL pee in that crate because he will not be able to hold himself, and no pup wants to pee where he sleeps you know? ;) Not much else exept CONGRATS and ENJOY!! :D He´s adorable!! :D |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! I'm glad you found us :) I agree with what the others have said... 7 weeks is very young to be away from momma, so it's important that your puppy has access to food at all times. Think of him as a premature baby right now, he needs you for everything. |
Welcome to YT. He is a cutie. You look so excited to have him. |
Aww... He is a cute little guy. CONGRATS!!!! |
3 Attachment(s) Thanks so much for the warm welcome! I already love it here! Well, his name has apparently been changed by my mom from Mowgli, to Charles Mowgli Weasley. (Also known as Charlie). I work at a school and a parent of one of my kids has two yorkie show dogs and they mated and had a few puppies. Charlie was born with floppy ears, and that is not desirable apparently. So, she gave him to me for much cheaper and I love him! I think he's desirable! Everyone has been telling me he's too young, but there's nothing I can do now. I have been giving him wet food five times a day, and I went to buy puppy milk but the can said up to 6 weeks. Should I still get it? Attachment 392383 Attachment 392384 Attachment 392385 |
He is so cute!! Congratulations and welcome to YorkieTalk! We got our Yorkie Daisy at 8 weeks and our yorkie mix Teddy Bear at 7 weeks. They are both larger yorkies but they did fine. They are happy, healthy 10 year olds now. Looking forward to watching little Charlie grow up! |
Charlie is a cutie. You are going to have a lot of fun watching him grow. They do sort of what they want being that young but have patience. He is going to grow into a beautiful little boy, Congratulations on your new fur baby. |
I went to PetSmart today and I saw that they have a vets office right in there. Does anyone have any experience with PetSmart as a vet? Or anyone in Massachusetts with a suggestion? |
Congratulations. He's cute. |
He is adorable. Welcome to YT. Besides all the advice on feeding please check his gums regularly for pinkness to ensure he is drinking enough. They dehydrate quickly at that age. Also don't overplay with him he will need lots of rest still. I don't know anything about bansfield vets personally but have heard some bad stories. Personally I prefer local vets who remember my pups from visit to visit :). |

I´ve never heard of anyone who has ever had an issues.Just keep his food out 24/7 and control when he eats.If he hasnt eaten in a few hours, put him on your lap and hand feed him some kibble soaked in chicken broth etc. I also used to give mine a swipe (on the roof of the mouth) of honey twice a day just in case ;) You can get Nutrical though, so use that :) Honestly, he´ll do fine.I´ve raised 5 yorkie pups from very young ages (well, to those of you in the US anyway - it was standard to me lol) and never had a single issue :) P.s - Keep your eye on him and if you notice anything off, don´t hesitate to take him to the vet, because toy breed puppys (nothing to do with his age, just toy breeds in general) fade very fast. There must be no ifs ands or buts ;) |
Congrats on your baby. Along with the rest of the information, please keep him at home. I would wait until you get some vaccines in him. I would leave him be safe in his home, rather than taking him places. |
