New Yorkie mom! :doghouse: Hello, I'm new to this whole forum thing, so if I make mistakes please forgive me! I am a proud new mom of Napoleon. :animal36:lovewings He will be three in Dec. I bought him from a lady who did not have time to give him the attention he needed. This is my first Yorkie and I have to say I am head over heals in love with him!!! :kiss4: I am hear to learn everything I need to about the breed, so that I may spoil him rotten! :D I have a few questions. He feels kinda thin to me and his hair seems thin as well. Is this par for the Yorkie? Should I double up his food? I feed him Blue Buffalo for small breeds. I am looking into the Royal Canine, people speak so highly of. :cheer: Thank you in advance for any helpful info. I look forward to making new friends here.:ghug: Tippy |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on the new addition to your life! Looking forward to seeing Napoleon's pictures. I would have your vet evaluate his body weight. Before my first Yorkie came into my life, I thought all Yorkies were plumper. This is not standard. When you look down on his back, he should ideally have a waistline. You should also be able to feel his ribs with a gentle squeeze. Finally, he should have a "tuck," which means the stomach is not as low as the chest. Is he neutered? Unneutered males will be even thinner. I would feed a little less than the guidelines on the food bag, which tend to be a little generous in the amount suggested for most dogs. |
Welcome! I would ask you vet about his weight just to be sure. It's better for them to be a little on the thin side than overweight. Love to see pictures. |
2 Attachment(s) Thank you so much for the advice. He has an appointment Monday. Hopefully it will all go well. I attached a couple of pics. ( I think? lol ) Please tell me what you think. All opinions are welcome. |
I would check with your vet. I had mine on Royal Canin and she did great on it. I now have her on Artemis puppy. |
Welcome to YT you will love it here...thanks for posting pictures so darn cute! what an adorable face...good luck at the vets I am sure everything will be great! again welcome....so cute!! hugs |
:coffee_n_ A friend of mine suggested I shave him over the winter, so the coat can grow back thicker. Told me not to worry about the cold because I will have sweaters on him and that it should grow back in by Spring. Anyone here tried this? |
He is an absolute doll! I can see why you are in love. Glad you will be going to the vet for a wellness check. The doctor can advise you on weight. My Teddy was very thin his first 3 years. He started putting on more muscle this past year, but he is still finely built compared to my other boy. I don't think shaving makes coat grow in thicker. His coat looks very nice to me. |
Welcome to YT. Good luck with the vet, and I love the pic with his tongue out, very handsome young man there. I have my puppy on Royal Canin, but not the Yorkie 29, Gina had an allergic reaction to that one. Everyone here has their favorite brand of food for their furbabies, so I'd ask your vet for an opinion, but as long as he's healthy and not having any reactions to his food, I'd stick with it, Yorkies are notorious picky eaters. Enjoy and good luck. Cheers Quad:aimeeyork |
Have you taken him to your vet for a check up? That is something that should always be done when getting a new dog. The vet can tell you if he is under weight. You also can make sure to get him on heart worm medicine and make sure he has a clean bill of health. Congrats on your baby he is a cutie. |
Welcome & Congrats on your new pup. He is adorable.. |
