Grooming?? Okay so my 5month old Yorkie hates bathtime. I understand this is common for most puppies/dogs but I was wondering if anyone has any tips on calming him down. I don't like seeing him scared but I don't like him stinking either :( help ! |
Try making bath time a pleasant experience, as much as possible. Where do you bathe him? I use a sink because my boys are too nervous in a bathtub. We use the faucet spray hose for the body and a measuring cup to pour water over the head. I talk to my boys during the bath, praising them and saying silly things, and telling them what I am doing: "Time for the shampoo to scrub a dub dub, Max in the tub." :D This seems to be calming and reassuring. I massage their bodies while working in the shampoo. They are always happy to smell the conditioner because they know that means they are almost finished. Then I have big, warm towels to wrap them in before letting them run and do zoomies. Finally, we have treats and hairdryer time. Make a ritual out of the whole process and your little one will hopefully learn to tolerate the bath. You may also consider different methods of bathing --- i.e. sink vs tub, or pouring water vs. spraying water. |
I would take a lot of treats with you t where your bathing him and break them up into small pieces and give him a piece pretty close together and eventually you can space it out and maybe just get to using one and giving it at the end of the bath. I sang to my yorkie and when bathing my moms yorkie (a rescue) and just made up silly songs and did it in a very happy voice and they both are great with baths now. Also talking to them and telling them how great they are is a good thing. |
Maximo gave you a lot of good advice. I'd just like to add one more. Are you using the bathtub or sink? I use the sink b/c it gives them less space to "roam" about. The faucet is also moveable so I give them "water massage" for a while so they can get used to the water. Another thing that helped calm my two down was putting something that had traction on the bottom. Like a bathmat or a towel even. |

thanks for the advice. Bathtime happens in the bathtub just because it gives me more space to move about. I will definatly be trying the sink though and see if thats any better. i do reward him with treats throughout bathtime and this seems to work considering he is greedy ! :D Thanks again guys ! |
When we first got our little one, she was afraid of the sound of the running water. We exercised her a bit (a walk or play with toys) to get rid of any pent up energy. In the beginning, we would run the water and sit with her in the bathroom and treat her. Just so she would get used to the sound of the running water. Then treat her throughout the process of the bath. 5 months later, she is still not thrilled about bath time but she will stay still and not wiggle around. |
