Quite a scare last night! ...last night my husband and I learned some very interesting information! - we had just returned from my in-laws (they live abt half a mile from us) and we always take Oakley so he is smelling around the mulch (like always) and all of a sudden he starts shaking his head like crazy. He goes running past my husband and towards me and as he does I can see he is foaming at the mouth and still shaking his head. I start freaking (calmly freaking as to not freak him out) my husband (who basically is not freaked out abt anything) freezes and all I can muster is "CALL YOUR DAD NOW!!!" As my father in law pulls in the drive Oakley is doing a lot better but before he even steps out of the car he asks "has he bit a toad?" As he says this out of the mulch hops a toad! So according to my father in law and numerous websites a toad can release a chemical tht if ingested by a dog can make him foam and it obviously tastes bad! |
Oh my gosh, how scary! I would've absolutely freaked if I saw my dog with those symptoms. I would've thought scorpion / bee / spider / snake bite - but I never would've guessed toad. So whatever the toad releases isn't toxic then? How is he doing today? |
My cousin lives in fla where they have many poison toads. Her JRT puppy bit a toad & died from it. I take my guys to fla frequently in the winter & was very worried about the toads. I always watch closely for them. My vet told me if they ever get one I should immediately rinse their mouths out with the hose & call him right away. |
How is Oakley now? |

Not sure what county my cousin lives in, but her pup died from biting a toad in Lake worth fla. My Fla vet ( in Martin county) did tell me we have toads in that area that can make my pups sick if I don't rinse their mouths out right away. |

I keep a close eye on Abbi whenever we're outside. |
Oakley is fine today. The toad wasn't poisonous thank goodness! I'm pretty sure we have no poisonous toads here in VA. It was just a horrible tasting substance it released and whatever may bite or lick it doesn't want to swallow causing it to foam and slobber. I rinsed his mouth out and then brushed his teeth. But yes it scared me to death. My first thought was he had swallowed a piece of bark or something and it hung in his throat. I kept saying breathe Oakley breathe!!! And he was. But I was so freaked out I couldn't tell at first. Then I thought did a snake bite him??!! But all within 10 seconds we saw the toad! |
We have some here that are toxic called Bufo and they come out at night and sit under my yard lights to catch bugs. They are so huge and ugly my dogs won't go after them, but Meika will sit and bark at them. Here's some info on how to recognize symptoms and treat Bufo Toad Poisoning |
Yeah, that would be a scary sight for sure!! My big dog bit a toad last year. The toad died. My dog didn't foam at the mouth but he didn't have the toad in his mouth for very long either. He just dropped it fast and shook his head so it definitely put off something that didn't taste good. So glad to read that Oakley is doing fine today :) |
We've had that happen too! They foam so much from it! Its scary! Glad it wasn't poisonous. |
That would be a scary sight! So glad that everything turned out good for Oakley:) |
Fortunately most dogs learn after one experiences! I know mine would! They don't seem to be too interested in the toads but my Gracie stalks nightcrawlers! LOL |
Yep, Tyson kissed a toad last summer. He started shaking his head and foaming at the mouth too. I freaked and called the vet because I really thought he was poisoned. The vet just chuckled and told me to rinse his mouth out, and also to keep an eye on him for lethargy and upset tummy. Tyson (5lbs) didn't feel well all day and definitely had an upset tummy, as he vomited a couple of times that day. The vet did say "we do not have poisonous cane toads in North Florida" so he should be fine. Needless to say, Tyson is a quick learner.....he does not try to kiss toads anymore! |
we live in mass....my daughter and son in laws boxer bit a toad...same thing happened to him... |
