Importance of Training

We have all seen here on YT the folks who lovingly introduced us to their pups, especially the young members who have gone on to have families and find that their pups no longer fit.

I firmly believe that much of that is because the pups are not trained correctly from the beginning.

Who gives away a properly trained and socialized pup? It always breaks my heart when an old member comes here because they now have to find a good home for their pup because of family issues etc...

I saw this poem on the SPCA website in my area where they offer training classes...it brought tears to my eyes thinking of all the pups I've seen here who have had to be rehomed because they no longer "fit" in the family....

Sadly it does happen.

My cousin adopted a dog a few months ago. The woman HAD to get rid of him that weekend because she was 2 months pregnant.

He'd be the perfect dog to have with a baby. He's a total love, very gentle, doesn't mark or chew, loves everyone and their other dogs.
They couldn't have gotten a better dog if they tried.

There was no real reason to get rid of him, but we're glad they did.

So sad. Yes training the pup is important, however owner's need some training too. Too many people get a pup for the wrong reasons and are not capable of loving them and caring for them for life.

It sickens me that people don't look at it as a long term commitment. Our little kids with fur are not disposable, and should not be cast away so easily when it becomes "inconvenient".

I loved the poem, Just like children && any other living creature consistency is key in training. So is patience, Nothing will happen overnight. && there is never a need for negative discipline. You can always offer distraction. Until the desire to do that (-) behavior is totally eliminated. Of course if you aren't ready for a dog. Don't get one to begin with.. Or foster. That's always an option. If you are just wanting something to love temporarily. That's like having a child and then.. Well this isn't going to work for me. Well you know what they say. You lie in your bed you have to make it. The sad part is dogs now days are so easily exposed of. : ( That's always something that I pray about. Cruelty to animals and children. Basically those with no voice. Because all you become to me at that point is a weak predator..... My mother always told me. THINK before you act.! God Bless! XoXo

What I did

I have had cats and dogs all my life. But before I picked Gideon up yesterday I read, and read and read. I came here to this website and I read some more. I'm not new to dogs but I still read, and read some more. OK yes I had (have) Yorkie fever too! LOL but I didn't get him on a whim. I studied the breed and took what others said to heart. I made the best choice for me and I hope for Gideon. He seems happy!

Yes to training.

Lynzy, I completely agree with you. Just a little bit of hard work at the front end will pay off big for years and years of a really great relationship with our pups.

I think we (society) wants everything so fast - we forget that some things take a little time - and we get impatient and don't do what is needed - which is laying the foundation first.

I have trained Pluto a little here and there but realized I haven't given us the best foundation - (he was barking a little too much, jumping up on the kids in the neighborhood etc.) - so I decided to do us both a favor and we are in formal training now. He has responded SUPER well and just really wants to please. Less barking already. Don't know why I didn't do this sooner but - I think it's never too late.

Training! :)

It is very sad... Thanks for posting this Lynzy.

Between small kids and a 12 week old Yorkie, and my disabilities, Megan didn't get all the training she should have. I loved Megan as much as my kids, and never thought about giving her away. I loved her till the day I had to have her put to sleep, at 15, one of the worst days of my 44 years. Gina is in her second level of training now, and doing fairly well, She lets me know when she needs to go outside, very few accidents any more, she's 4 1/2 months old now. Come, and gotcha are still being worked on, as well as down, for lay down, but she is getting it, and loves the attention. My Dr. has challenged me to lose some weight, and get more exercise, so Gina and I walk around the block. We work on her walking on my left side and heal as well. Training is a must for both the furbabies and us as well. Thanks for the reminder to everyone and the poem.

I couldn't agree more and saying it in all caps to prove it! (But it wouldn't let me post all in caps for some reason so....)

Train and keep training your dogs! If you do it right, it reshapes them into wonderful little pleasures to have around.

I absolutely agree// we took morgan to a training class which was a 2 hour drive each way( gotta love these wide open spaces in Montana) for a total of 12 weeks and it made him such a great dog , we still work with him on a daily basis and when we get our next yorkie next year, we will do it again

Linzy, thanks so much for posting this, the last line of the poem made me cry.
I also want to mention how important training classes can be for those who already know how to train their dog. I've been to many classes & know what to do (for the most part). But I hired an in home trainer for Stan who has fear issues, & she's taught me so much. I also enrolled Phoebe in a class @ petco for socialization & never realized how much I needed it lol! Even though I know what to do, the class has really motivated me to practice & train more at home. It made me realize that knowing it & practicing it are worlds apart! I'm so proud of the progress my babies are making! My family is getting tired of hearing me say "look what Phoebe/Stanley can do!" I had forgotten how much fun training can be!

Thank you for posting. It made me cry. There is so many people out there that just treat them with disregard. I would do anything for my babies. I did. When I was moving into an apartment I hunted for one that took cats. I paid a little more but it was worth all the money I had to keep them. I would have given up anything for them. But I would never given them up. Since then I live in a house, I have lost one to cancer, gained two more and a crazy puppy too ;)

Hrossen11 09-23-2013 06:40 AM

I agree which is why I wanted a puppy instead of older dog, so I could train my dog to fit my lifestyle and any changes that come along.
