I agree that the 'fee' is not about keeping any purebred lines "pure" and taking a mixed breed pup, well, there is nothing 'inherently' wrong with that IMHO when you are giving an 'oops' puppy a loving furever home...a chance at a wonderful life it might never see otherwise. Having an "accident" litter is quite a different thing from intentionally breeding mixed dogs with other mixed...or even purebred...dogs. I don't even mean health issues...just the 'perhaps questionable moral values' of the owners who use 'nature' in such a way so they can 'earn a living off a dog's back' by putting it through unnecessary welpings for monetary gain. I have adopted pets from shelters (paid a small fee), fostered for shelters (paid for all medical at my vet instead of burdening the shelter with that cost), tamed (spayed/neutered, kept, fed, and loved) ferals and strays (paid all costs involved)...and taken care of their litters (ditto $). I have had 'other people' be irresponsible with my dogs when they were watching them so that I ended up with oops litters, too. I never charged a penny for my oops puppies, and they got shots, de-worming, etc., at my expense, and didn't leave my home until they were 3-4 months old at a minimum...and they were large breed mixed pups. They went out the door only after I'd met the families, but when they left, they already had been potty trained and had basic obedience training...and minded well when they left. The new owners got a 'lesson' from me as to how to continue my training with their new baby, and all were thrilled with their new fur babies. Keep in mind that I am not a breeder...I just have decent moral values and accept responsibility to ensure that when things have 'gone wrong' with animals that I own, or can help, that I 'take charge' and correct the 'wrongs' again as best I can. If this was/is someone you know, who you feel giving that money to...to help them out in time of need, perhaps...I see nothing wrong with you obliging your conscience...if that is your choice. However, if these are 'profiteer breeders' using the health and/or availability of their mixed breed dogs to fill their bank accounts, the game changes for me. To a certain extent, I can even understand some 'hobby breeding' of mixes (which are not 'designer' dogs...just 'experiments' IMHO) depending on the 'reason' for doing so. I certainly might consider paying a reasonable fee for a 'deliberate' mix under the 'right' conditions, too. I have had lots of mixes but I did not pay for any of those dogs...some were strays, some oops pups, some horribly starved rescues on their way to the pound to be put down that no one else would touch...but there was no profit involved...it was all about the dogs going to good homes so they had good chances at good lives with good and responsible people who would love them and care for them the same as I would if I had been able to keep them all myself. If there are 'enforceable legalities' regarding breeding where you are, I might make an offer to give the puppy a good, loving furever home for FREE (or very low fee to cover shots de-worming, accessories, etc.), if they will 'cease and desist' in making more of the same and avoid...well, whatever is 'enforceable' in your area. ;) But...that's me! :p:D You should, and likely will, do whatever is 'right' for you! :) |
