Dex got nicked by the groomer! My poor baby! My poor groomer, she certainly seems wonderful and she felt AWFUL! She put peroxide on it and then styptic powder. I couldn't get a good look at it the other day bc it was so fresh it was skin colored. But now, after a couple days and his non-stop licking, I can see it's almost a hole. :( Sometimes he acts like it's HORRIBLE, and other times (like when he's chasing the bunny) hes not affected by it at all. I don't want to put an e-collar on him while I'm at work so I know he's just going to lick it non-stop all day today. At least yesterday and the weekend we were around and able to stop him when we caught him. The groomer was very apologetic, said she spends 1/2 the time holding him and the other 1/2 trying to groom him. He's tough, wiggly and just wants to be held the whole time she's trying to do anything. I know she's right bc I can't even brush him. I just hope it heals w/o getting infected from his licking! |
So sorry to hear this happened to your baby:( |
Poor Dexter. Did you try putting an antibiotic ointment on it. I hope he feels better soon. |
IF he's still licking tonight I will do that and put his e-collar on. I don't want to put it on w/o the e-collar so he does not just lick it off, but I won't leave him home alone with the e-collar on, so yeah I'll do that tonight. I can just use Neosporin right? I have triple antibiotic ointment for dogs, but I think I remember the vet tech telling me it was neosporin that I paid more for. LOL |
Just reading the description makes me cringe... I nicked both Magnus and Zoey couple times. It was HORRIBLE! I think you should put one of those soft e-collars on him when not supervised... If he licks it too much, it might take longer to heal. Also use antibiotic ointment like Patti suggested. I don't know who I feel worse for... the groomer, you, or Dex. :( |

Poor guy, it's hard for groomers sometimes. We often hear horror stories but I know from friends the great exist too. So true what Magnus said some wouldn't mention it. I recommend a cotton ball with organic apple cider vinegar to clean it and coconut oil when it dries, give him a wee hug for me. Tufty is a massive wiggler and Teegy is a mama's boy so I do all the grooming and I've found Tufty tends to fall asleep now as I try to be as gentle as I can |
Oh I tried so hard to groom my boys on my own! Fletch was easy and I did ok with him, but Dex was a nightmare. I'd be crying in frustration, he'd be mental, it was awful. We'd both need valium and a drink after I was done. LOL The groomer said he just wants to be held all the time, he climbs her while she tries to get his underneath. This is probably the 4th time she has groomed them and this is the first nick. It just looks painful! :( Oh I will try the vinegar/coconut oil thing. Thanks Actually I'll do Argan oil, I forgot I have that and I know it works well to heal small cuts, burns, etc... |
Where was he nicked?? |
On the curve of his knee on his back leg. |
Bless his heart. I'd do something to keep him from licking it. I recently had to try various things to keep my Shelby-Dale from licking a wound. It was getting red and infected. |
Neosporin is fine. Watch close for infection. No licking - just going to make it worse. The bet might have some Bitter Apple in stock (or maybe a pet store) to put near the area. Is he on pain meds? |
Poor pup, hope he heals up and feels better soon |
Aww poor Dex. I would also use the collar on him when you are home. It will help it to dry out. I hope he feels better |
Poor guy. I'm glad your groomer told you right away. It happens, I have nicked my two before :( |
I put triple antibiotic ointment on it and his little Halloween PJs, they cover that area completely. He looks frustrated because he can't lick now. Just one night of this and it already looks better. DH is home today (I don't leave them home alone with clothes or harnesses or anything on them just in case) so this morning we put more ointment on and left his PJs on. I think he hates his PJs though! LOL They are too cute I think! Black with tiny little orange pumpkins all over them! LOL Anyways, he can't lick now and it looks better already. He is only bothered by it when he's not occupied with something else. Last night he curled up on me wrapped in a blanket and didn't move for nothing. Wouldn't eat dinner, but neither did Fletch. About 10pm I took them out for their last potty of the night, they both ran back in, up the stairs and gobbled their dinner up before I even got upstairs! LOL I think he's fine, he knows how to milk anything for extra attention! |
No! Seriously? They 'milk' a situation...just for the attention? Not my kids...okay, you caught me...I lied... :sidesplt: Seriously, I saw your thread yesterday and I felt sooo bad for Dex, you, and your poor groomer, but didn't have time to post just then. I came back to see how Dex is doing and I am so glad to see Dex is better today. I guess nicks happen but I wish they didn't...so scary...and it's awful when they are sick or hurt! Hopefully, Dex will heal quickly, and you can quit worrying. Sending belly rubs to Dex...hugs. |
awww thanks for worrying about my baby! Yeah he's doing better. His little cut looks like a hole actually. But it's not red at all anymore, so I'm pretty sure we are safe from infection! I don't mind babying him so much! :) |
